> With Ding Nanyu

> In days past, though I had not yet met you in person, I had already glimpsed your heart. When we finally met by the riverbank, I beheld your spirit. All the Buddhas of the three times and ten directions, along with the ancestral masters through the ages, shine their light and stir the earth from the tip of a single hair on your head—this is no wonder. You once bestowed upon me the Bodhisattva’s illusion-like samādhi, and each time I received the sprinkling of your sweet dew, my feverish afflictions were instantly cooled. Later, when Jueyin brought the portrait of Patriarch Kang, unfolding it amidst the miasma and poisonous fog, it made my blood and tears flow forth from every pore of my body. Patriarch Kang is the ancestor of our Changgan lineage. His śarīra are the very flesh and bone of my teacher. As an unworthy descendant who has inherited this family’s way, how could I bear to let our ancestral fields become overgrown with thorns? And how could I bear to see his present form dwell in this sea of pestilence? I beg you, lay practitioner, to honor this sorrowful vow of mine. Master Da’s verse of praise truly has the power to awaken one. Gazing upon his image and reciting his words time and again can truly transform this flesh-and-blood body into adamantine bone. For this profound teaching, I have nothing adequate to offer in return—save this old Duan inkstone. May it serve you well. If this inkstone is ever ground through, then the light of your own body shall stand alongside Mount Lanka in the ocean of true nature.
