Bodhi Place One-Syllable Crown Wheel King Sutra (菩提場所說一字頂輪王經)

Chapter 12: The Practice of Verification and Study

At that time, the World-Honored One, having fully realized the boundless Dharma Realm and removed all obstacles, addressed the Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi, saying:

"Vajrapāṇi! If a virtuous man, virtuous woman, bhikṣu, or bhikṣuṇī wishes to practice the inconceivable seal-samādhi of the Buddha's Crown, they must uphold their respective precepts with diligence: A bhikṣu should abide by the bhikṣu precepts, A bhikṣuṇī should abide by the bhikṣuṇī precepts, An upāsaka should abide by the upāsaka precepts, An upāsikā should abide by the upāsikā precepts.

If a sincere practitioner wishes to cultivate the path of true words, they should first enter the mandala and receive the Three Refuges, arouse the mind of enlightenment, and perfect the ten virtuous actions. As taught, they should practice the true words, maintain excellent mindfulness, draw near to and serve good friends, and constantly cultivate the six recollections. They should contemplate the nature of reality as empty like space, skillfully train in entering the realm of transcendent wisdom, and in this practice, be without deception or carelessness. They should well follow the conduct of the buddhas and bodhisattvas of the three times, dwell in solitude, and not cling to body or life. At the three times, they should well receive the precepts of the Three Refuges and the bodhisattva vows, remember and practice the profound Dharma teachings they hear, skillfully cultivate the four means of attraction, and before the stupas of the Tathāgata, often make mandala offerings. Toward the rituals of the true words, they should always be diligent, build stupas, and practice with body and speech focused and pure—not angry, not agitated, not restless, not speaking too much, not speaking chaotically, and not deceiving others. Toward all beings, they should always act with respect and a loving heart, and well understand the teachings of the Tathāgata’s hidden intent.

In brief, practitioners should always harbor a courageous and greatly diligent resolve, establishing all beings on the path of the buddhas and bodhisattvas. Whether one cultivates the true-word practice of the Buddha-Crown King or other true-word practices, they should well practice and accomplish the merits as described. As the extensive sutras teach, the practice of true words should be cultivated, each abiding by their own precepts and well upholding them.

Again, the Buddha addressed Vajrapāṇi: "As described, a practitioner who cultivates the Buddha's Crown mantra has already attained an accomplished body, like the newly risen sun. Adorned with ornaments of pure gold—necklaces, armlets, and bracelets—he shines with the color of Jambu River gold. All exquisite adornments grace his form; he wears heavenly robes of wondrous beauty, complete with all auspicious marks. His body is perfectly proportioned, majestic and extraordinary, radiant with a hundred thousand beams of light. A halo extends an arm's length around him, surpassing the brilliance of the sun, outshining all other forms."

Furthermore, Vajrapāni, the accomplished Vidyādhara, upon merely being seen, brings joy to all beings, just as a wish-fulfilling tree fulfills every desire.

Furthermore, Vajrapani! The Bodhisattva who has attained the Wheel-Turning King's Buddha-Crown can descend into the hell realms and shower them with all kinds of heavenly, exquisite food and drink. He can also fulfill all the needs of sentient beings, satisfying whatever hopes and desires they may have. In brief, I say he possesses great majestic virtue. Vajrapani! Those who master the Wheel-Turning King's mantra can fulfill all the wishes and delights of sentient beings; whatever arises in their minds, he causes it to be satisfied. Those who attain the Wheel-Turning King's accomplishment—even Bodhisattvas dwelling on the ten stages dare not disobey his commands.

Vajrapani! This One-Syllable Wheel King Mantra is the sovereign among all mantras, the great king of wisdom. If one practices it, it eliminates all karmic obstacles and eradicates all the karma leading to unfortunate rebirths. By mastering this mantra, all spiritual powers will manifest. In the blink of an eye, one can reach the Akaniṣṭha Heaven. All Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Śrāvakas will praise and rejoice. One attains all Bodhisattva practices, freely traveling to other worlds, and teaching sentient beings according to their inclinations and capacities with various sounds and methods. In short, I will summarize: one achieves the most supreme, vast, and wondrous accomplishments of form and conduct among sentient beings in immeasurable, boundless worlds.

At that time, the Buddha spoke this verse:

"Through all battles, empty and free, Like a planted jewel shining bright, Or a blue lotus blooming in a pond. That supreme, brave, radiant one, Surpasses all worldly light, Unmatched by any mantra of Vishnu."

Then, the World-Honored One once more addressed Vajrapani, the Lord of Secrets, and spoke these verses:

是處不應居, 行者有障難;

"Briefly explaining the common methods, For those dwelling in secret places, The wise first act and then understand, Pointing out the most excellent signs.

Three types of ground are described: Low and damp, dry, And also high plateaus— Where celestial beings dwell Is called the superior ground. Three types of central ground are described: Places for seeking accomplishment, All accessible in three ways. The wise should observe Both pure and impure.

Celestial wonders also have three types, And within each of these, They are further divided into three: Rivers, lakes, seas, and mountain kings Are called the supreme places for accomplishment. Pure, impure, and virtuous combined Are named the middling places for accomplishment. If it is a charnel ground, That is called an impure place. This teaching covers all places, With three types of accomplishment grounds.

Places of evil, banditry, famine, and scarcity Should not be dwelled in— Practitioners face obstacles there; Such grounds should not be inhabited, Nor places of extreme cold, heat, or rain. In this teaching, all are regulated. Three times should be set for recitation, To nurture the mind's delight— Thus, one should embrace these three periods."
