Chapter 13: Homa Ritual
He further instructed Vajrapani: "Keep these practices secret, for their accomplishment should not be openly revealed. Within this teaching, the methods are called 'secret' because they lead to attainment. The distinctions between the fire altars for homa rituals should be carried out in secret. The three types—pacifying, increasing, and subjugating—should not be performed at the same altar. If one altar is used for all, the ritual will be flawed. For a subjugation ritual, do not use a pacifying altar. Just as milk placed in a poisoned vessel will spoil, so too will the ritual fail. Therefore, three distinct altars are prescribed after careful consideration of the three purposes, and other teachings also speak of these three. The altars are differentiated for their specific uses, so there is no contradiction. For pacifying rituals, use kusha grass sprouts, clarified butter from a cow, udumbara wood, milkwood, and turmeric. Perform the homa three times to seek pacification, and you will obtain various benefits. If medicines have been stolen, use black sesame mixed with honey, along with palasha wood and celestial wood, and apply white mustard seeds while performing homa and reciting praises. For all three types of rituals, use clarified butter in the homa offering."
Then, the World-Honored One Śākyamuni again addressed Vajrapāṇi, the Lord of Secrets, saying: "Within this, the King of Teachings for practice, is for the benefit of sentient beings." And he further spoke this verse:
"This mantra's light, Manifests great power and virtue in many forms.
By practicing the supreme Buddha-crown, Through its many mantra lights, And the boundless, wondrous radiance of the Buddha-eye, All benefits are achieved, along with the mudras.
I have already taught the universal king of mantras, For those seeking accomplishment, to gain its fruits. Now I will explain the mudras, For those seeking spiritual attainments.
I will now explain in sequence, The many forms of the universal Buddha-crown mudra."
With both hands, cross your fingers inward to form fists, raise the two middle fingers and join them together, bending the upper joints. This is the universal seal of all Buddha crowns, capable of accomplishing all beneficial purposes.
"By seeing this hand seal, It is like beholding the Buddhas themselves.
The unruly yakshas, Nagas, and asuras, All the rakshasas— Through the power of this seal, They melt away in fear.
This is the great true mantra, The heart of all Buddha-crowns."
"Namo Samanta Buddha Namah, Om Talu Mandala Svaha."
And then he spoke these verses:
If one obtains this seal, they will gain all kinds of peace and joy. Kings and all beings in the world will always benefit from it.
Those who seek the benefits of the Dharma will surely attain them. If one obtains this seal, all suffering will be extinguished.
From this fundamental mudra of all Buddha-crowns, all activities are accomplished. For the practitioner who guards the senses, using the tips of the middle fingers to move back and forth with this fundamental mudra is called the Welcoming Mudra.
All the general offerings previously mentioned—incense, flowers, fragrant smoke, food and drink, lamps, and so forth—can be presented using this fundamental hand gesture, empowered by their respective mantras, for universal application.
Use the previous hand gesture, but curl the two middle fingers into a ring shape. This is the gesture for inviting the Fire Deity. The mantra is the same as mentioned before. When sending off the Fire Deity, turn the gesture outward and pull it back—this becomes the gesture for sending off the Fire Deity.
Furthermore, this mudra is also the same as the previously described "Buddha's Crown Mudra" used for rituals. With the middle finger of the right hand bent at the upper joint, press it firmly against the upper joint of the middle finger of the left hand—this is the "Destroying Crown Mudra."
It can perform extraordinary deeds, It can accomplish all things, In places where protection and boundaries are set, It should be received and used.
"Also, move the left middle finger, bending its upper joint to press against the upper joint of the right middle finger—this is the Destroying the Summit Seal. The mantra is as previously stated."
This is called the Destroyer of Peaks, It tames those who are hard to tame; In the face of great obstacles, Use this to protect yourself.
Just as with the previous common mudra, bend the middle finger of your right hand at the third joint and press it against the first joint of your left middle finger.
To purify a place, use this to destroy obstacles. When seeking accomplishment, form this to protect the space. Move the left finger as before, and with this seal, guard the area. This is the heart of all Buddhas’ pinnacle; apply it to destroy hindrances. Use it for self-consecration; this seal should be employed regularly. Whoever masters this seal can purify the recitation chamber. Always during cleansing rituals, the practitioner should apply it. That person will be free from all obstacles by reciting this mantra, and should use it in sequence. The samaya of this lineage is always practiced with this seal. One who cultivates the mantra will be free from demons within this teaching of the Buddha’s pinnacle. Thus the Buddha has spoken.
From the previous mudra, cross the two middle fingers on the back of the hands, forming a circle.
This Unconquerable Summit mantra, Which can destroy all transgressions, Has been spoken of before. It dispels ominous dreams, Accomplishes auspicious deeds— Apply this great seal.
When you are about to sleep, If you recite it for yourself, It can remove all kinds of obstacles. I now explain it briefly; To speak of it in full would be endless.
Here I give this concise teaching For those who practice the Buddha's Summit, Together with the Buddha-Eye mantra, Reciting to attain accomplishment. In all assemblies, I have already spoken of this before.
"By practicing these true words, one speaks of liberation; All Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas, Attain peace and joy, gain benefit and advantage, Increase diligence and great strength. For the benefit of sentient beings, diligently cultivate, Completely removing all doubts.
Therefore, O Vajra Secret Lord! Listen attentively as I proclaim to you. I have briefly spoken of the corresponding meaning; This is the secret practice of the enlightened one.
Three times perform the homa with celestial wood, Sesame oil, ghee, and milk blended together. With this joyful king of true words, I shall proclaim the accomplished lord of true words, Accomplishment through recitation and homa, Expounded through the support of these three methods.
Within each of these practices, Recitation and practice are spoken of in three kinds: Body, speech, and mind, explained in sequence, Through which one aspires to increase benefits.
Further, three kinds should be known: Celestial, roaming the skies, and earth-dwelling. For those seeking accomplishment, there are three types. For cultivating the three kinds of categories, Accomplishment is sought for desires, wealth, And the Dharma through recitation, Exerting diligence according to the siddhi sought. For seeking all accomplishments, One should skillfully erect a caitya according to the Dharma, With right view and great compassion seeking accomplishment.
For such a person, accomplishment is not difficult; In this life, one attains supreme peace and joy, And in future lives, liberation is assured. In ancient times, many attained accomplishment By practicing this supreme and wondrous crown of Buddhas; I too have practiced this Buddha-crown king."
At that time, the World-Honored One, Shakyamuni Tathagata, with the Buddha's eye, observed immeasurable and boundless worlds, and again addressed Vajrapani, speaking these verses:
"In the teachings already explained, the precepts and the rules, The actions to be taken and the deeds to be performed, Should be practiced within this Dharma. With that sacred nectar, The Kundali Vidyaraja fully masters the three divisions. I speak of the ritual methods, Which should always be practiced. Through the power of these mantras, All obstacles are entirely removed. As taught in the Vidyaraja Sutra, The mudras of the wrathful kings, And all the rituals therein, Are fully applied here. One should not eat onions, garlic, radishes, or leeks, Nor anoint the body with oil, nor consume oil. All impure foods, Prohibited in other teachings, Should not be eaten. For those seeking spiritual accomplishment, Who constantly strive for purity of body, The Invincible Mantra should be applied To the five purifications, every half-month. All other practices taught elsewhere Should also be fully undertaken. Here, I have spoken briefly. What is taught in other sutras, I will not elaborate on here. All Tathagatas Have spoken of the nature of mantra Dharma. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas Have practiced and proclaimed it. Abiding in that mantra form, They move through the world, Performing vast acts of benefit. For those of lesser wisdom, They fully explain its majestic power. Now, I speak but a little, Praising its merits. Even over a hundred eons, One could not fully describe the Dharma-nature Of the Wheel-Turning King. This merit is boundless, Boundless and ungraspable. If one obtains this King of Teachings, That person is equal to the Tathagata, And equal to the Bodhisattvas. Devas and Asuras pay homage, And the mind attains non-regression. Constantly and eternally, one gains thus: The accumulation of merit from past lives, The provisions for enlightenment, All through the power of the Secret Lord, Of great majestic spiritual strength. Know that such a being Always attains a purified body. If one obtains this King of Teachings, One fully attains all, And realizes the honor of the Two-Footed One."
When the Buddha had finished speaking this sutra, Vajrapani the Secret Lord, the great bodhisattvas, the bhikkhus, and all the beings of the world—devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, and so on—having heard the Buddha's teaching, rejoiced and undertook to practice it.
