Chapter 4: Bestowed Transformations and Empowered Manifestations in the Samadhi of the Five Crown Kings
At that time, the Buddha Shakyamuni said to the Vajra-bearing Secret Chief: "Listen carefully once more. The Method of Depicting the Transformation Image of the White Canopy Crown King was taught by countless Buddhas, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, for the sake of all future sentient beings.
"If painting an image, the artisans tasked with protecting and weaving the Dharma should proceed as follows: Within a square area of three cubits, paint a Bodhi tree. Directly beneath the tree, paint Shakyamuni Buddha, endowed with the marks of a great being. His body is golden-white, and he appears in the posture of teaching the Dharma, seated on a lion throne.
To the Buddha's right, paint Vajrapani, his body purple-red. His right hand holds a vajra scepter, and his left hand holds a white and red offering, palms joined in reverence.
Next, in front of the Buddha, paint the White Umbrella Canopy King, his body golden in color, adorned with all excellent marks. He holds a lotus flower in his hand.
On the left and right of the Bodhi tree, paint the gods Kurulva, each holding a jeweled lasso.
In the sky above, paint the eight pure abode deities, each scattering flowers and riding on multicolored jeweled clouds.
To the right of the Buddha's seat, paint the mantra holder, kneeling on the ground, looking up with reverence, holding an incense burner.
All sides, above and below, are to be covered with various flowers.
Vajrapani! This is called the Painting Method for the Transformation Image of the White Umbrella Canopy King."
Again, I address you, Vajrapani: I will now teach the method for making an image of the Buddha of the Blazing Crown Peak. The painting method is as described above for protection. The canvas may be either square or round, measuring three or one cubit across. Under a bodhi tree, paint Shakyamuni Buddha seated in the lotus posture, emitting rays of jewel-like light, displaying the mudra of teaching, and sitting upon a jeweled lion throne adorned with lotuses. To the left and right of the tree, paint the goddesses (Kotivarsha? ) holding jeweled ropes. Above, in the sky, paint eight pure abode deities, each scattering flowers while riding upon multicolored jeweled clouds. To the right below the throne, paint the mantra practitioner kneeling and gazing up at the Buddha, holding an incense burner. Behind the Buddha, paint a mountain adorned with various ornaments. At the base of the Buddha’s seat, paint the great ocean waters, and within the water paint many lotuses, fish, and sea creatures. Vajrapani! This is called the Image of the Buddha of the Blazing Crown Peak. It is taught by all Buddhas in order to guide sentient beings, to help them accomplish all dharmas, and to liberate them from difficulties.
Now I will teach you about the "Superior Crown King Image." If you wish to paint this image, the method for preparing the canvas is the same as described above. The size may be three cubits square, one cubit, or round. The Buddha sits beneath the Bodhi tree teaching the Dharma, as previously explained. His right hand is extended, palm open, resting on his right knee in the gesture of fearlessness. His left hand lies horizontally, palm upward, placed below the navel. Light radiates from the crown of his head. Above him, on either side of the tree, are the deities "Julu Zun Tian" as before, along with the nine pure dwelling celestial beings, also as before. The image should also include the mantra holder, as previously described. This is called the "Superior Crown King Image." It was taught by all Buddhas out of their compassion for all sentient beings.
"Furthermore, Secret Lord of the Dharma Seal, you should fully understand that the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas possess countless physical forms and transformations to guide sentient beings. For sentient beings who wish to realize these mantras, they should constantly cultivate a correct mind of compassion, joy, equanimity, generosity, patience, ethical conduct, diligence, meditative concentration, Prajñā-pāramitā, and the supreme Bodhi mind, benefiting all beings. Wherever convenient, on silk, paper, or a board—whether one cubit or half a cubit in size—they may freely paint and make offerings of it. Then they will attain the supreme accomplishment of the Five-Peaked Crown Wheel King Samādhi, which enables the practitioner to quickly reach the stage of non-retrogression."
