陵和南。昨預沈儀同法席。餐奉甘露無畏之吼。眾咸歸伏。然正法炬。朗諸未悟。自慶餘年得逢妙說。尋事諮展。此不申心。謹和南。

> From Ling to the South, Yesterday, I attended Dharma Master Shen's lecture and partook in the sweet dew of his teachings. His fearless lion's roar subdued the entire assembly, and he kindled the torch of true Dharma, illuminating those not yet awakened. I count myself fortunate to have encountered such wonderful teachings in my remaining years. Awaiting the opportunity to consult with you further, I will not elaborate more here. With respect, I bow to you.

陵和南。注仰之心難可敷具拔。公至蒙三月二十日旨。用慰積歲傾心麥冷體中何如。願一日康勝。山中春夏無餘障惱耳。遲復存旨。弟子二三年來。溘然老至眼耳聾闇心氣昏塞。故非復在人。兼去歲第六兒夭喪。痛苦成疾由未除愈。適今月中又有哀故。頻歲如此窮慮轉深。自念餘生無復能幾。無由禮接係仰何言。敬重璪公今還白書不次。弟子徐陵和南。

> To Master Zhi, with deep respect. My admiration and longing for you are beyond what words can fully express. I was fortunate to receive your letter of March 20th, which brought comfort to my soul after years of yearning. I trust the cool weather finds you in good health. May you continue to improve with each passing day. In the mountains, spring and summer pass without major worries, offering some peace. I humbly await your reply. For the past two or three years, I—your disciple—have felt the sudden onset of old age. My eyes and ears grow dull, my mind clouded. I am truly no longer the person I once was. Furthermore, last year I lost my sixth child, and the grief has left me ill, with no sign of recovery. Just this month, another bereavement occurred. Year after year, these sorrows deepen my sense of hopelessness. I fear I have little time left. Without the ability to visit you in person, my longing and devotion can only be expressed in writing. I respectfully entrust this message to the esteemed Master Zao, who is now returning. Your devoted disciple, Xu Ling, in respectful sincerity.

陵和南。放生星聞。公家極相隨喜事。是拔公口具謹不多諮。唯遲拔公廷出。數百里水全其命根。如此功德算數無盡。隨喜無量。此不委諮。弟子徐陵和南。

> To the Venerable One in the South, Regarding the release of the captive star-creature, the authorities are greatly delighted by this act. This matter was personally communicated to me by our beloved Venerable, so I shall not elaborate further. I simply await the day you are released from court, so that for hundreds of li along the waterways you may fully save those lives in need. Merits such as these are beyond counting, with blessings that are immeasurable. Our joy in this is boundless. With respect, I shall not trouble you further. Your disciple, Xu Ling, respectfully bows.

陳徐陵五願上智者禪師。陵和南。弟子思出樊籠無由羽化。既善根微弱。冀願力莊嚴。一願臨終正念成就。二願不更地獄三途。三願即還人中。不高不下處託生。四願童真出家如法奉戒。五願不墮流俗之僧。憑此誓心以策西暮。今書丹欵仰乞證明。陵和南。

> Chen Xu Ling, disciple of the Master of Wisdom, makes five vows: I, Ling, prostrate myself in respect. Your disciple wishes to escape the cage of worldly existence but has no way to take flight and transcend. My roots of goodness are shallow and weak, so I entrust myself to the adornment of the power of vows. First, I vow that at the moment of death, my mindfulness will be correct and accomplished. Second, I vow never again to be reborn in the hells or the three lower realms. Third, I vow to be reborn directly among humans, in a station neither high nor low. Fourth, I vow to leave home in pure youth and uphold the precepts in accordance with the Dharma. Fifth, I vow not to fall into being a worldly-minded monastic. Relying on this resolve, I set my mind to guide my remaining years. Now I write down these sincere aspirations, respectfully seeking your confirmation. I, Ling, prostrate myself in respect.
