Bardo Sutra, Scroll 3
後秦涼州沙門竺佛念譯
Translated by the Later Qin Dynasty monk Zhu Fonian of Liangzhou.
神足品第六
爾時，妙覺如來即以神足化此三千大千剎土，上至非想非非想天、下至無救地獄，皆悉金色，皆如妙覺如來而無有異——三十二相、八十種好、圓光七尺——皆坐寶蓮華高座上坐，演出梵音，聲聞三千大千剎土。
At that time, the Wondrous Enlightenment Tathāgata—through his spiritual power—transformed the entire billion-world universe. From the highest heaven of neither perception nor non-perception down to the deepest hell of no rescue, everything became golden. Every being took on a form identical to the Wondrous Enlightenment Buddha—endowed with the thirty-two marks of greatness, the eighty fine features, and a luminous aura seven feet wide. All were seated on jeweled lotus thrones in high positions, and their voices resounded throughout the billion-world universe with the majestic sound of Brahma's voice.
一一諸佛說八萬四千雜行，其覩光明者，淫、怒、癡病皆自消滅，異口同音而說頌曰：
Every single Buddha teaches the eighty-four thousand various practices. Those who behold this light find that their afflictions of desire, anger, and ignorance naturally vanish. With one voice, they recite this hymn:
「經法本無體， 滅已今復興，
斷除有漏法， 獨步於三界。
生死無數劫， 遭遇良福田，
金色普遍照， 蒙光得解脫。
神力不可盡， 觀了本無形；
大慈大悲心， 拔濟無明等；
五陰苦本源， 流浪得濟渡；
四使生死河， 法船渡彼岸；
善權無礙道， 入彼無為境。
吾昔發誓願， 要度未度者，
修身清淨行、 口言無虛妄、
心念濟八難， 諸惡何由生？」
The Dharma's true nature has no fixed form, Yet after its quieting, it now shines once more. Cut off the outflows, the taints that bind, And walk alone across the three realms.
Through countless eons of birth and death, I met the field of great merit along the way. Golden light spread its radiance everywhere, And by that light I found liberation.
The power of the spirit can never be exhausted— Look deeply, and it has no shape at all. With a heart of great compassion and great mercy, It lifts all those lost in ignorance and darkness.
The five aggregates are the root of suffering, The wandering ones are carried safely across. Across the river of birth and death with its four currents, The Dharma boat ferries us to the far shore.
The path of skillful means is free from obstacles, Leading into the realm of the unconditioned. Long ago I made a solemn vow: To rescue all who have not yet been saved.
Cultivating a pure life in body, Speaking words that are never false, And keeping the mind set on saving those in peril— How could any evil ever arise from this?
爾時，有菩薩即從坐起，偏露右臂，右膝著地，長跪合掌叉手，前白佛言：「快哉，世尊！神足無量不可思議。今欲所問，若見聽者乃敢陳啟。」
妙覺如來告彼菩薩：「善哉，善哉！族姓子！恣爾所問，吾當一一分別說之。」
Wonderful, wonderful! Child of noble family, ask whatever you wish, and I will explain it all to you one by one.
時彼菩薩白佛言：「世尊！如來神足不可究暢，令此三千大千世界烔然金色。是何三昧有此神變？」
At that time, the Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! The supernatural powers of the Tathagata are beyond comprehension, causing this entire three-thousand-fold great thousand world to shine with a radiant golden hue. What samadhi possesses such miraculous transformation?"
佛告菩薩：「此神變者，是三昧王三昧，唯有諸佛乃能變現，非聲聞、辟支佛所能。修行此三昧王三昧，將從八萬四千——或有三昧名虛空藏、或有三昧名昇法堂、或有三昧名月光清淨、或有三昧名破有入無、或有三昧名一意不亂、或有三昧名除去塵霧、或有三昧名拔三毒根本、或有三昧名滅過去當來今現在病、或有三昧名開甘露法門。」
The Buddha told the Bodhisattvas: "This supernatural transformation is the King of Samadhis, the Samadhi of Samadhis. Only Buddhas can manifest it—it is beyond the reach of voice-hearers or pratyekabuddhas. Cultivating this King of Samadhis will lead to eighty-four thousand—or some samadhis named 'Space Treasury,' some named 'Ascending the Dharma Hall,' some named 'Clear Moonlight,' some named 'Breaking Through Existence into Emptiness,' some named 'Single-Minded Undistracted,' some named 'Dispelling Dust and Fog,' some named 'Uprooting the Three Poisons,' some named 'Curing the Sickness of Past, Future, and Present,' some named 'Opening the Door of Nectar Dharma.'"
爾時，世尊欲解斯義，宣說頌曰：
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to explain this meaning, proclaimed these verses:
「道力清淨行， 身、口、意不犯，
誓願阿僧祇， 沒溺生死者。
金剛難敗壞， 非二乘所及，
觀身苦根本， 思惟四果證。
積行不退轉， 閑靜坐道場，
一切入定意， 二、三、至七劫。
地燋過劫燒， 其心亦不動，
壞破魔部界， 悉成無上道。
三昧定意力， 福報不可量，
令三聚眾生， 得成無上道。
觀察眾生心， 難度、易度者，
不令在沒溺， 流滯生死海。
我本無此色， 紫磨金光體，
歷劫勤苦行， 修定成此形。」
With the power of the Path, pure in conduct, Free from offense in body, speech, and mind, I made a vow across countless eons, To save those drowning in the sea of birth and death.
Unbreakable as diamond, Beyond the reach of lesser vehicles, I see the body as the root of suffering, And contemplate the fruits of the four stages.
With persistent practice, never turning back, I sit in stillness at the place of awakening, Entering deep concentration, For two, three, up to seven eons.
Though the earth scorches and the eons burn, My mind remains unmoved, I shatter the realm of Māra's host, And all attain the supreme path.
The power of meditative concentration, Its blessings and rewards are immeasurable, Causing all beings of the three assemblies, To achieve the unsurpassed enlightenment.
I observe the minds of beings, Who are hard or easy to guide, Never leaving them to sink, Drifting in the ocean of birth and death.
Originally I had no such form, This body of radiant golden light, But through countless eons of diligent practice, I cultivated concentration to attain this body.
爾時，妙覺如來說此頌時，諸佛、世尊同時舉手讚妙覺如來，以偈頌曰：
At that time, as the Supreme Enlightenment Tathagata spoke these verses, all Buddhas and World-Honored Ones simultaneously raised their hands in praise of the Supreme Enlightenment Tathagata, and recited this gatha:
「丈夫二足尊， 世雄不可量，
拔離三界苦， 淡然為一色。
今聞如來說， 定、意、神足、道，
其聞法性相， 相相不可量。
八種清淨音、 十六特勝法、
三十二行業， 利益一切人。
天人尊無比， 光明照眾生，
久在飢渴道， 飲以八解脫。
無欲清淨池， 化以七覺花，
不著五陰本， 猶如青蓮華，
香熏遠普聞； 如來五分身，
無處不流布。 吾昔求佛道，
誓願同一時， 今日得果證，
不違昔所願。 一相、無相道，
分別微妙慧， 曉了善權道。」
The noblest of beings, the one of two-legged kind, The world's hero, immeasurable in might, He lifts us from the suffering of three realms, Serene and one in hue, beyond all plight.
Now hearing the Tathāgata's teaching deep— On concentration, mind, psychic powers, the Path— Dharma's true nature, mark beyond all marks, Immeasurable in every aspect's math.
Eight pure tones of voice, sixteen special aids, Thirty-two types of deeds that benefit all. Heaven and earth's supreme, without compare, His light shines on beings, answering their call.
Long lost in hunger and in thirst's dry ways, They drink from eight liberations' cooling spring. The pure pool of desirelessness—its blooms, Seven flowers of awakening they bring.
Unattached to the five aggregates' base, Like a blue lotus rising from the mud, Its fragrance carries far and wide to all— The Thus-Come's fivefold body, a sacred flood, Flows everywhere without a single trace.
Long ago I sought the Buddha-way, Vowing to awaken in that very hour. Today the fruit of realization's won— My word fulfilled, not lost its ancient power.
The path of one-mark and of marklessness, Distinguished by the finest wisdom's art, I now clearly understand the skillful means, And the good path that leads every heart.
當時世尊說此頌時，有百億希望中陰眾生求佛身色紫磨金形——如我今日神變無量——要當來世皆當成佛，悉同一號，號妙覺如來、應供、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊。
When the World-Honored One spoke this verse, hundreds of millions of beings in the intermediate state, who longed for the Buddha's body with its radiant golden hue—endowed with boundless miraculous powers as I am today—vowed that in future lives they would all attain Buddhahood under the same name: Wonderful Enlightenment Thus Come One, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Enlightened, Possessing Clear Wisdom and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Supreme Being, Tamer of Beings, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, World-Honored One.
