> Chapter 12: Subduing the Senses

> A practitioner whose lust, anger, and ignorance are diminished, even if not yet free from worldly dust and its disturbances, may think they have attained the Way before truly realizing the Noble Truths. Such a practitioner restrains their own mind, yet lets it wander among thoughts of form, sound, scent, taste, and touch, clinging to the five aggregates, with their work still unfinished. If the mind does not follow the veils of the five aggregates, then one knows the Way is attained. But if the mind is disturbed and follows desires, they must return in fear and strive with renewed vigor. It is like a cowherd tending cattle in the marsh. If a cow runs wild and tramples another's grain, the cowherd fears the owner will find out, so he leads it home and disciplines it with a stick. The next day, he takes it out to pasture again, pretending not to watch—will the cow again trespass on another's crops? The cow then thinks, "The herder isn't watching," and eats another's seedlings. When the owner sees this, he strikes it again. Afterward, the cow becomes afraid and dares not trespass anymore. In the same way, a practitioner who restrains the five senses from following desires knows the Way is achieved. If they slip into the six sense-fields, they must regain self-control, contemplating the suffering of the three wretched realms and the hardships of birth and death. Then, day and night, they strive with diligence ten thousand times greater than before. What has not yet been attained, they shall bring to fulfillment; what has been attained, they shall guard without negligence.
