Twelve Gates Treatise Doctrinal Meaning Record (十二門論宗致義記)

第五、辨能詮教體者,以名句文及所依聲而為自性。或說五法為性:一、名;二、句;三、唱;四字;五、聲。然通論此體,總有四重:一、約事,具假實二法,如上辨;二、約實,以假歸實,唯以聲為性;三、約似,謂唯識所現,似聲等為性;四、約性,謂此聲等即空無性,無名無聲、無無名無無聲為自性,謂離性之性也。

Fifth, discerning the nature of the teaching that conveys meaning: It takes names, phrases, texts, and the sounds they rely on as its inherent nature. Some say it has five aspects as its nature: 1. Names 2. Phrases 3. Utterances 4. Words 5. Sounds

However, when discussing this nature comprehensively, there are generally four levels: 1. **From the perspective of phenomena** — it includes both provisional and real aspects, as explained above. 2. **From the perspective of the real** — the provisional is subsumed into the real, so only sound is taken as the nature. 3. **From the perspective of appearance** — it is what consciousness manifests, taking the appearance of sound and so forth as its nature. 4. **From the perspective of true nature** — these sounds and so on are empty and without inherent nature. No name, no sound, no absence of name, no absence of sound — this is its nature, which is the nature beyond nature.
