> Chapter 8: Learning the Classics

> First, study the precepts. Then study the sutras. Do not disregard this order.

> Learning means awakening. It is awakening to what one does not yet know. Furthermore, learning is like adornment. A vessel without adornment cannot achieve beauty; a person without learning cannot attain sage-like virtue. Therefore, learning serves to clarify the spirit, broaden the mind, soothe the emotions, and cultivate one's nature. It is the highest task of the sage. As the ancients said: a tree without branches is called barren; a person without learning is called blind. Since ancient times, even sages and worthies have diligently pursued learning—how much more should ordinary people today? Can anyone become a true adult without learning? The Sanskrit term "sutra" is translated here as "scripture." Scripture is like a path—it is the road traveled by practitioners of the three vehicles, leading them to Nirvana. Learning must rely on the teachings of the sages; one must not violate or skip over the proper sequence of study. Therefore, one should study the precepts first, then the scriptures—as if holding a ruler and compass in hand. To study the scriptures first and the precepts later is like lacking a ruler—then squares and circles lose their proper form.

> Before studying any scripture, you must first inform your teacher. Once you have completed a scripture, you must also inform them before beginning another.

> A novice monk, with limited experience and understanding, does not yet grasp the proper sequence of the teachings or what should be studied. Therefore, he must first seek permission from his teacher before beginning his studies. Once the teacher grants approval, the student must make daily progress, reviewing what he has learned while also exploring new material. In his spare time from study, he should remain by his teacher's side. According to the major monastic rules, the Buddha established two types of learning: first, recitation and comprehension of the teachings; second, meditation and contemplation. Meditation serves to calm delusions and reveal truth, while comprehension helps to develop profound wisdom. As the Prajñāpāramitā Sutra states, the study of meditation is called "opening wisdom," and the study of discourse is called "expounding wisdom."

> Do not blow dust off the scriptures with your mouth.

> First, bad breath. Second, it shows a lack of respect. You should use a clean object to brush it away. As stated in the \*Manjushri Sutra\*, if you use your mouth to blow dust off of offerings or ceremonial objects, you will fall into the Utpala Hell. In a later life, you will become a wind spirit king.

> Do not store tea leaves or miscellaneous items on the sutra table.

> To treat the scriptures with disrespect is to take them lightly. The Pure Regulations state: "To privately hoard tea powder invites ridicule from onlookers. Nor should one place secular books, unclean vessels, or even items like hats and fans on top of the Buddhist sutras and precepts."

> When reading scriptures, one should not walk too close in front of the scripture table.

> You lose your own dignity and disturb the minds of others.

> When scriptures are damaged, they should be repaired promptly.

> This scripture is like a family register. If it is damaged, repair it quickly, before it becomes ruined. The sutra is like one's parents. If your parents fall ill, treat them promptly, before the illness becomes difficult to cure. If you delay, it will be too late.

> A novice monk whose fundamental practice is not yet established should not study secular books, histories, or texts on governance and worldly affairs.

> For those whose fundamental practice is not yet established: this means the ten precepts are not yet pure, dignified conduct is not yet complete, and the sutras and teachings that novice monks should study—such as the Forty-Two Chapters Sutra, the Sutra of the Buddha's Last Teaching, the Lotus Sutra, and the Shurangama Sutra—have not been mastered. As for secular texts: "secular" refers to the various schools of thought and the hundred philosophers; "texts" refer to the historical records of various states. Whenever there is a generation of rulers and ministers, there must be a history of that generation. Histories record the traces of what was lawful and unlawful, successes and failures of the time. For example, the virtues of Yao and Shun are recorded, and the deeds of Zhi and Jiao are also recorded. The conditions of heaven and human affairs, good and evil, praise and blame—all are fully recorded to warn later generations and gain the trust of the future. Therefore, they are called trustworthy histories. External texts, such as the classics of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, the writings of Confucius and the Duke of Zhou, and even the Four Books and Five Classics, teach filial piety to govern the family, loyalty to govern the state, cultivating oneself and nurturing one's nature, assisting the nation and benefiting the people. Thus they are called the statutes and codes for governing the world. Because their teachings stop at cultivating the self and ordering the family, they are called "external." The teachings of the Three Vehicles, which teach calming the mind and dispelling delusion, seeing one's own true nature, are called "internal." The \*Fuxing\* commentary states: "If one studies external texts, in the Hinayana teachings, to subdue non-Buddhists, one is allowed to study external classics for one period out of twelve. In the Mahayana, beginning bodhisattvas are absolutely not permitted. They should first advance in practice; when they reach the stage of purity in the six senses, learning will not be difficult, and it will not be too late." Ancient masters said: "Much knowledge and many affairs—better to quiet the mind. Much thought and many errors—better to guard the One. Excessive thought scatters the will; excessive knowledge disturbs the mind. A disturbed mind gives rise to affliction; a scattered will obstructs the Way. Outstanding talent and skill—these are called foolish hindrances. One skill, one ability—like a solitary lamp at sunset. One ability, one skill—like a mosquito in the empty sky."

> Appendix: One must not pick and choose which sutras to study for the purpose of attending Dharma assemblies.

> When studying scriptures, one must seek to comprehend their meaning. This can be done through recitation or by upholding their teachings. However, they should not be studied for the purpose of performing rituals for hire. "Performing rituals for hire" refers to those who take up cymbals, drums, and other instruments to respond to invitations for ceremonial services. In Buddhism, there is originally no such concept as "rituals for hire," nor are there scriptures designated for this purpose. What are now called "ritual scriptures" are texts and repentance ceremonies used by monks who perform such services for others, including rites for the living and the deceased. Yet, scriptures and repentance ceremonies are the supreme treasures of the Buddha's teachings. Upholding even a single phrase or verse can eradicate sins, generate blessings, and plant the seeds of enlightenment for eternity. To trade these sacred teachings for worldly wealth and profit is truly lamentable. If a devoted layperson invites a monk, seeking blessings for the living or the deceased, the Buddha only permits monks to recite verses of blessing or to chant a single scripture to benefit them. There is no such thing as performing rituals for hire.

> Do not study or create false scriptures.

> Such texts as the \*Diamond Vajra\*, \*Diamond Treatise\*, \*Blood Bowl\*, \*Wondrous Sand\*, \*Salvation from Suffering\*, \*Dividing the Pearl\*, \*Receiving Life\*, \*Northern Dipper\*, and the three-volume \*Lotus Sutra\*, along with the \*Heart Sutra\* received in a dream, the commentary by Wugouzi, and the recorded sayings of Taichu—all these are demonic teachings.

> Do not study fortune-telling.

> It refers to books that use the principles of yin and yang, the seven celestial bodies, the five movements, and the sixty-year cycle to predict a person's lifespan, fortune, poverty, or prosperity. However, while heaven may have calamities that can be averted through prayer, humans have misfortunes that can be transformed into blessings. Therefore, when one does good, a hundred blessings descend upon them; when one does evil, a hundred calamities befall them. Thus it is said: a single good thought brings auspicious winds and harmonious energy; a single evil thought summons baleful stars and fierce ghosts. A single good word can cause the planet Mars to shift its course three times. Examining the past and verifying it with the present provides ample proof of this truth. Moreover, these matters are profound and subtle, rarely can they be fully understood. As Huan Tan of the Han dynasty said, "The way of heaven and the nature of life are difficult even for sages to explain." Since the time of Zigong, these teachings have not been passed down. How can later generations of shallow scholars comprehend them? Even if one could grasp them through comparison, such knowledge is truly not fitting for a Buddhist disciple. It harms both oneself and others, corrupts the true Dharma, and the consequences are far from trivial.

相書。

> The Book of Physiognomy.

> It is said that by examining a person's appearance and observing their spirit, one can discern their fortune and misfortune. This practice is recorded in books. Tracing the origins of these texts, they have been passed down through twenty-seven different schools, yet none can be considered the authentic tradition. They falsely claim Bodhidharma as their founder, seeking to gain the trust of later generations, but in doing so, they slander the sages—a sin as vast as the heavens. Wealth and poverty, nobility and lowliness, beauty and ugliness, gain and loss—all these arise from the good and evil actions one has performed in past lives. Thus, in this present life, one reaps the varied fruits of these causes, whether general or specific, direct or indirect. These are transformations of the eighth consciousness, the manifest aspect of the mind. Once this manifest aspect is determined, not even the heavens, the earth, or the gods and spirits can alter it. Only by performing good or evil deeds oneself can one change it. Therefore, it is not something that can be measured or predicted by others. How can one possibly know it by merely observing a person's appearance? Followers of the Buddha, do not be deceived by such delusions.

> Medical texts.
