### 示洞庭山許門石氏求來世為僧

> Instruction to Lady Shi of Xudongting Mountain<note>Requesting rebirth as a monk</note>

為僧雖好。僧不修行。後生墮落。受無量苦。應當一心念佛。求生淨土。親近金木雕裝之假像。不若親近現在說法之真佛也。淨土為僧。勝過此世界為僧。遠之遠矣。

> Though being a monk is good, if a monk does not practice, he will fall in future lives and endure immense suffering. You should focus your mind on reciting the Buddha's name, aspiring to be reborn in the Pure Land. Clinging to false idols carved from wood or painted with gold is not as meaningful as drawing near to the living Buddha who teaches the Dharma right now. To be a monk in the Pure Land is far, far better than being a monk in this world.
