> Response to Layman Sun Daheng of Yuyao

> If you are developing faith in the Pure Land, you should study the teachings with a focus on this sutra's commentaries and explanations, while letting other texts take a secondary place. When reading the commentaries, do not try to finish them all in one go. Instead, read a little each day, taking many days to complete them. Read slowly and thoughtfully, savoring the meaning. Only then will you deeply realize that the Pure Land path is the most essential door to spiritual practice. The ancient masters said, "Among all methods for crossing the sea of birth and death, mindful recitation of the Buddha's name is supreme." These are not empty words.

> Furthermore,

> Whether you recite loudly, silently, or in whispered murmurs—all are not only unhelpful but also detrimental. When your thoughts are scattered and racing, simply lightly raise the Buddha's name once. That immediately stops them. Then observe: \*Who\* is reciting the Buddha's name? As time passes and thoughts arise again, do the same—raise the name, observe. If no thoughts arise, simply keep observing. Put aside all scholarly texts and worldly writings—setting them down will not hinder your studies or career pursuits.
