Chapter 1: The Achievement of Great Illumination

The Bodhisattva Nāgārjuna briefly presents from the Mantra Treasury.

Translated by Dharma-Virtuous, Master of Bright Teaching, Court Minister of the Imperial Library, Tripitaka Master of the Western Regions, by

At that time, the World-Honored One said: “This great Vairocana Tathāgata Yoga teaching — if virtuous men wish to cultivate the practices that lead to various accomplishments, in the Great Mantra of Cundā, they should focus their minds single-heartedly and diligently. Whatever they desire will be achieved without fail.

“If a practitioner wishes to attain the supreme and highest accomplishment, they should first recite the Root Mantra of Cundā by the seashore, and build a sand stupa six hundred thousand times. Once this is completed, whatever they seek will certainly be realized.”

"Furthermore, if you wish to see Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, or Tārā Bodhisattva, or Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva, and so on, then practice as explained before. These Bodhisattvas will surely appear before you, comfort you, and fulfill all your wishes. Whether you seek methods for winning affection or respect, or desire various sacred medicines, or aspire to the rank of the Asura king, or wish to attain the state of a celestial being, all such aims will be achieved. If you practice diligently and persistently without retreat, you may even attain the state of a Bodhisattva."

Moreover, if a practitioner, before a Buddha stupa or at the site of enlightenment, recites this Great Mantra [大明] one million times, once the count is complete, an Arhat will appear and speak to them, granting great benefit. From then on, the practitioner will walk alongside that Arhat, sharing in their dignity and virtue.

Furthermore, if a practitioner goes to the summit of Vulture Peak [正覺山] and, before a Buddha stupa, always keeps a simple meal in their bowl and recites the Great Mantra one million times, once the count is complete, they will behold Vajrasattva [金剛手菩薩]. The Bodhisattva will personally lead the practitioner through the Door of Auspiciousness, saying: “Enter this door. There will be no demonic obstacles. All your wishes will be fulfilled. You will be free from every fear, experience great bliss, and in the future you will meet Maitreya [慈氏], hear the sublime Dharma, realize the Bodhisattva stages, and even attain the stage of an irreversible Bodhisattva [阿吠嚩哩底迦菩薩].”

Alternatively, if a practitioner goes to the summit of Vipula Mountain [尾補羅山], maintains perfect purity, always carries a simple meal in their bowl, and before a statue containing relics offers incense, flowers, lamps, and ointments according to their means while reciting the Great Mantra three hundred thousand times—once the count is complete, having prepared a vast offering and maintained even stricter purity and fasting—on the fifteenth day, they should recite continuously day and night without pause. Vajrasattva will definitely appear and lead the practitioner to his own palace and through the Door of Auspiciousness, allowing them to enter. This will extend their lifespan equal to the sun and moon.

Furthermore, if a practitioner goes to the stupa of the Three Precious Stairs [三道寶堦佛塔], always keeps a simple meal in their bowl, circumambulates the stupa to the right, and recites the Great Mantra one million times, once the count is complete, they will behold Aparājita [無能勝] and Hārītī [訶利帝], and their wishes will be granted. Hārītī will lead the practitioner to her own palace and present them with various sacred medicines. Aparājita will appear and teach the Dharma, guiding them to realize the path of enlightenment, give them sacred medicines, transform the practitioner’s body with supreme qualities, and cause all Bodhisattvas to guide them on the path, enabling them to quickly take their seat at the site of enlightenment.

This Cundā [尊那] Great Mantra has been equally proclaimed by all Tathāgatas [如來] and all Bodhisattvas. It brings great benefit to all beings, eventually leading to the attainment of unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment

"Furthermore, there may be beings who have committed great evil deeds, lacking any seeds of goodness, so that the mind of enlightenment cannot arise in them, and they will never attain the factors of enlightenment. Such a person may suddenly encounter a spiritual teacher and hear this great mantra just once with his ears. His heavy sins will diminish and weaken, and seeds of goodness will then grow in him. How much more so for a practitioner who constantly recites and focuses on this with diligent effort. Such a person who seeks accomplishment will definitely attain it."
