Chapter 4: The Great Mandala

The Buddha said to Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva: “Those who practice by chanting and reciting, wishing to create a maṇḍala to accomplish great attainments, should mix cow dung and yellow clay with water and coat the ground according to the proper method. Then apply white sandalwood, spikenard, saffron, camphor, and musk for further refinement and adornment.

At the center of the altar, place a wish-fulfilling jewel. In the very center rear, place the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra. Directly behind it, place the Great Perfection of Wisdom Bodhisattva. To the right, place Amoghavajra Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, and Maitreya Bodhisattva, among others. To the front left, place Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, Sūryaprabha Bodhisattva, and Candraprabha Bodhisattva. At the lower left front, place the immovable messenger. At the lower right front, place Vajra with a lotus, Water Auspicious Bodhisattva, Cintāmaṇicakra Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, as well as the one-tufted Rākṣasa messenger, Brahmā, Sakra, the Four Great Heavenly Kings, Īśvara, Maheśvara, Yama, the Earth Deity, Nārāyaṇa, Sarasvatī, Lakṣmī, Siddha immortals, dragon kings and daughters, Hārītī, and agrarian deities.

Along the left and right sides, arrange the five-colored powders, extending them as the outer boundary. Set up one hundred sixty-four oil lamps, along with sacred water, incense, flowers, food, and various offerings—all prepared according to the proper method without interruption. Practice the eight precepts daily and nurture the aspiration for enlightenment. Those who construct this altar shall surely accomplish all attainments.”

The Buddha further said: "Now I will explain the method of painting the image Mandala. First, paint a great ocean, and within that ocean, paint a two-tiered great jeweled palace, adorned with countless treasures. Inside the palace, paint a seven-jeweled altar. Upon a jeweled lotus flower, paint the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel King, and let it emit radiant light. To its right, paint the image of the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī, and to its left, paint the image of the Bodhisattva Ākāśagarbha, each holding their respective ritual attributes according to their own teachings. Outside the palace, in the sea on the right side, paint the Nāga King Nanda, who has nine heads on top, riding on black clouds, holding a jewel in his left hand, guarding the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel King. In the sea on the left side, paint the Nāga King Upananda, who has seven heads on top, riding on black clouds, holding a maṇi jewel in his right hand, protecting the image of the Maṇi Jewel King. This is called the method of painting the image Mandala. Facing this image while forming mudrās and reciting mantras, all supreme attainments will be obtained without seeking. This is the supremely secret, unsurpassed, profound, and ultimate teaching, incomparable and above all others."
