Chapter 6: The Master Attains Buddhahood
At that time, Shakyamuni Buddha entered the Concentration of the Diamond that is the fundamental nature of all Buddhas—the equality of the Dharma realm, arising from the awakening of enlightened intention, the practice of the Bodhi path, and the eternal abiding in great Nirvana. He then spoke this mantra, proclaiming that all sentient beings are destined to attain Buddhahood:
Homage to the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.
"If any sentient being recites this even once, they shall cross the vast ocean of birth and death and reach the shore of Great Nirvana. All beings will fulfill the three kinds of Siddhi, and every extraordinary vow and all good wishes will be accomplished at once. Therefore, you should devote yourselves single-mindedly to this practice and attain the supreme, unsurpassed Siddhi. Now I open the secret, unsurpassed treasure vault for all who practice the true mantra Dharma—this is the ultimate profound secret, the most secret of secrets. I now proclaim it."
The Buddha spoke this True Word, and immediately Vairocana (the All-Pervading Illuminator) placed upon his head the crown of the Five Wisdom Buddhas adorned with vajras. Then he proclaimed the Great Ocean Seal of Attaining Buddhahood in This Very Body, also known as the Samaya Seal.
“If any child of the Buddha wishes to attain Buddhahood in this very body, they should cultivate this contemplation. It enables an ordinary person, born of father and mother, to transform their physical body into the body of a Buddha.
First, facing the Principal Deity, the King of the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel, form the Dharma-Realm Stupa Seal: bring both palms together gently with fingers slightly curved, the eight fingers forming a jewel shape—this is the secret seal.
Contemplate the syllable AH (阿). It is the doorway to vast, pure wisdom in all things. Let this syllable expand and merge with your body’s size; within and without it becomes vast, equal to the infinite sky, free from all discriminating thoughts. Its soft yellow and white radiance illuminates the earth element’s subtle essence. It releases you from all mental images and karmic entanglements, yet still holds all sentient beings with compassion. It rests in the very heart of awareness, which is like open space itself. Through this, all supreme accomplishments are achieved.
Then the syllable VA (縛)—uttered without a hard cut—draws you inward as a mandala. Its snow-white, vajra-like radiance purifies your body like cleansing water, washing away all defilement.
The syllable RA (囉)—spoken with a trill of the tongue—opens the doorway of intrinsic purity and freedom from impure stains.
The syllable KA (迦)—pronounced from the throat—releases you from karma’s chain that pervades all phenomena, and carries you through the gateway that transcends defilement and the cycles of birth and death.
The syllable KHAM (欠) reveals the space of Great Emptiness, unborn and unconditioned. It supports the body, settling it into the Dharma realm itself—a state that has no conceptual wrestling, no split, no second.”
In a quiet place, clear an area four cubits long and wide, preparing it as you would before a sacred fire ceremony. Within its four gates, draw a circle with thirty-two petals—the pure lotus seat made of seven jewels. Rest the Bodhisattva King of the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel there, radiating light in every direction.
When beings of the six realms—gods, demigods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, hell-dwellers—come into contact with this radiance, they relinquish this body and awaken into the indestructible vajra-like samādhi, abiding in the noble rank of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, sovereign of enlightened ones.
Then all Buddhas and the sixteen Great Bodhisattvas touch their heads with their palms, conferring upon them their spiritual seal. Vairocana of the Adamantine Realm, ever-gentle, reaches out his right hand to touch their heads and marks them with the Buddha’s crown. They live secure for one full cosmic age, and without abandoning their present body, they see Maitreya Buddha directly. And when this final life is complete, they are born in the Pure Land of Amitāyus Buddha—the Land of Ultimate Bliss.
