Vimalakīrti Treatise, Volume 1
Commentary by Master Jizang
The monk Ji Zang of Jinling, Sramana, accompanied the Grand Councilor, Duke of Jin, to Chang’an. While residing at the Ripple Pavilion of Furong Park and the Rigeng Hermitage, he fell ill with a foot ailment due to an unbalanced diet. Fearing the journey south was still long and his life as fleeting as morning dew, he often reflected on words of consolation: the teaching of taming the mind and bringing it under control. From his youth, when he first received this sutra with reverence, to his old age, his appreciation and devotion to it have only deepened. He earnestly wished that the seeds of this sutra would never be lost and that its wisdom would shine brighter through countless kalpas. Therefore, he compiled what he had learned and composed this "Profound Treatise" (*Xuan Lun*).
In the past, Seng Rui and Seng Zhao awakened with innate genius, while Dao Rong and Dao Sheng possessed extraordinary insight. All of them applied profound thought to analyze the subtle and profound, yet their meanings reached the realm of pure mystery and their words exhausted the beauty of elegant expression. Nevertheless, this sutra has concise phrases yet rich meaning, and its ideas are profound and deep. Brief explanations could not fully reveal it, while extensive exposition made it seem manifest. Therefore, I have broadly gathered insights from north and south, culled from ancient and modern sources, re-examined scriptures and treatises, and added some personal contemplation. This effort has indeed been more than half the work accomplished; it may spare others the futility of such labor.
