1. When returning to your room after the meal, first soak your bowl in water. 2. Prepare a bowl of water and soak a two-inch piece of soap pod (a natural cleanser) in it. 3. When washing your face and rinsing your mouth, use ash and a willow twig. Do this in a private spot, not in front of senior monastics, and shield yourself with your hand. 4. If the bowl-rest is too short, yield it to senior monastics rather than placing it carelessly or blocking others from washing their bowls. 5. Before washing your bowl, always gather and tuck your robes to keep them from touching the ground. 6. To wash your bowl: first rinse it with clean water, then pour the soap-pod infusion over it, scrubbing the bowl with the soap-pod water in the bowl container until all grease and residue are completely removed. Rinse thoroughly. 7. When washing your bowl, clean the rim first, then the rest of the surface. 8. Do not wash your hands in the bowl. 9. While washing your bowl, do not chat or laugh—remain attentive and focused. 10. When washing, keep the bowl off its rest, at a height roughly the width of a hand. 11. Do not spit or blow your nose near the bowl-rest. 12. When starting to wash the bowl, the water vessel and ladle handle are considered "touched" (unclean). After washing the bowl, rinse the ladle handle with water before touching it again. 13. After washing the bowl, do not put your mouth on the bowl’s rim to sip water for rinsing your mouth. 14. In summer, after washing your bowl, set it in a clean place to dry, turning it over. 15. In hot summer weather, when washing the bowl in the early morning, always use fresh water. 16. If water has been left out overnight, strain it again before using it to wash the bowl, as insects may have bred in it. 17. After eating porridge, if you are invited out and cannot bring your bowl, clean it with soap pod—this applies in spring, summer, autumn, and winter alike.
