### 敬重上座法第二十十六條

> Respect for Elders, Chapter 20<note>Sixteen rules</note>

一、見上座，須起迎接。二、上座未坐，不得先坐。三、上座未受食，不應先受食。四、上座未食，不得先食。五、於上座不得爭勝。六、凡有勝事，先推上座。七、上座行事不是，當軟語設諫，不得呵罵。八、被上座呵罵，當軟語懺謝。九、於上座邊，不得輒有譏諷。十、於上座常下心謙敬。十一、被上座嫌罵，不得常瞋；當順上座，不得有違。十二、如請之事，當順上座，不得違命。十三、行須讓路，坐須讓位。十四、凡有苦事，下座前行先作。十五、不得在上座前行。十六、見上座當問訊，不得喧閙，謾說是非之事。

> One, when you see a senior monk, you must rise to greet them. Two, you must not sit before the senior monk has sat down. Three, you must not accept food before the senior monk has received theirs. Four, you must not eat before the senior monk has eaten. Five, you must not compete with the senior monk for superiority. Six, whenever there is an honor or privilege, you should yield it to the senior monk first. Seven, if the senior monk acts improperly, you should gently offer advice, not scold or berate them. Eight, if you are scolded by the senior monk, you should humbly apologize and repent. Nine, you must not casually mock or make sarcastic remarks about the senior monk. Ten, you should always maintain a humble and respectful attitude toward the senior monk. Eleven, if you are disliked or criticized by the senior monk, you must not hold a grudge; instead, you should obey them and not go against their wishes. Twelve, in matters of invitation or requests, you should follow the senior monk’s wishes and not defy their instructions. Thirteen, when walking, you must yield the path to the senior monk; when sitting, you must give up your seat to them. Fourteen, whenever there is arduous work, the junior monks should go ahead and do it first. Fifteen, you must not walk ahead of the senior monk. Sixteen, when you see the senior monk, you should greet them respectfully, and you must not be noisy or engage in idle gossip or spread rumors.
