Verse of Layman Dongpo
(From the White Lotus Collection: The Layman Dongpo, Su Shi, styled Zizhan, composed this Praise of Amitabha:)
The Buddha’s vast perfect awareness Fills the cosmos like infinite grains of sand. But I, lost in distorted thoughts, Sink and rise within the cycle of birth and death. How, then, can a single thought Lead me to rebirth in the Pure Land?
All the karma I've created since beginningless time Originally arose from a single thought. Since it comes from one thought, It also ceases with one thought. Where birth and cessation are completely extinguished, I and the Buddha are one.
Like pouring water into the vast ocean, Like the bellows in the wind— Even the greatest holy wisdom Cannot distinguish them. May my past parents And all sentient beings—
Wherever they are, be the Western Pure Land, Whatever they encounter, be ultimate bliss. May every person have boundless life, With neither coming nor going.
