Chapter 2: The Buddha Tames the Dragon and Prophesies

The fully enlightened Buddha, worthy of offerings, approached the great capital of Kosala and resided in Anathapindika's grove. (1) There, in Jeta's forest, the Buddha, king of truth, beheld the entire world with his radiant light, and looked upon the excellent island of Tambapanni. (2) After five years following his enlightenment, he journeyed to the land of Tambapanni, drove away the evil ones such as Avaluddaka, and made the island free of them. (3) Now, on that island, the mountains and sea serpents, crowded together, began a fearsome battle. (4) All the nagas possessed great magical powers, had terrifying venom, were entirely wicked and quick to anger, arrogant, and consumed by greed. (5) The serpents were swift and mighty, evil and cruel, rough and short-tempered, quick to rage and seeking destruction. (6) The powerful great-bellied nagas and the mighty small-bellied nagas squared off against each other, both sides possessing splendid forms. (7) No one could see a way to peace. The powerful great-bellied nagas, drunk with pride, laid waste to this island of rocks and forests, saying: "We will slaughter every hostile serpent with our venom." (8) The arrogant small-bellied nagas in turn roared: "Even if a thousand crores of nagas come to battle, we'll slaughter all who approach, and turn this hundred-league island into desert." (9) Thus there was no way to quell their malice. The serpent kings, possessing great magical powers, spat fire and smoke in their fury, and, consumed by their angry natures, urged their followers on to destroy their enemies in battle. (10)

The World-Savior, the Blessed Buddha, seeing the fierce anger of the serpent kings and their destructive struggle over the island, reflected on the greatest good of the many, including the gods. (11)

"If I do not go to Lanka, the serpents will not find peace, the island will be ruined, and there will be no happiness in the future. (12)

Moved by compassion for the dragons and all beings, wishing their happiness, I will go there to further the island's welfare." (13)

Knowing the virtues of Lanka's island, he thought, "The serpents drove out the demons before me; my good deeds must not destroy this island." (14)

Having spoken thus, the Awakened One rose from his seat, and the Clear-Eyed One left the fragrant chamber and stood at the gate of Jetavana Grove. (15)

The forest spirits of Jetavana all raised their hands and said, "Clear-Eyed One, let us go with the Buddha," and they paid homage to him. (16)

The Buddha replied, "No, all should remain. Let Samiddhi, one monk, come with me—he may bring the tree from his dwelling place, carrying it behind me." (17)

Hearing the Buddha's words, Samiddhi was delighted, and taking the tree with its roots trimmed, he followed the Tathagata. (18)

A mighty heavenly king, with great supernormal powers, supported the great tree from behind the Supreme One and offered it as shade for the Best of Awakened Beings. (19)

The Supreme One went to the battlefield of the dragons, and the Compassionate Teacher stood between the two mighty serpents. (20)

The World's Guide, the Awakened One, went to the space above the two serpents' heads and created a deep darkness. (21)

Then, by the great powers of the Lion of Men, darkness arose, and with that darkness he also veiled the nearby trees. (22)

The terrified dragons, unable to see each other or the Victor, no longer knew where to fight. (23)

They all stopped fighting, laid down their weapons, and stood with folded hands, honoring the Awakened One. (24)

The Buddha, knowing their hair stood on end, saw the frightened dragons and, filled with loving-kindness, emitted warm light. (25)

That marvelous, bright radiance made their hair rise. They all saw the Awakened One as if seeing the moon in a clear sky. (26)

Standing there, radiant with six-colored light that shone throughout the sky and the ten directions, he called out to the dragons: (27)

"Great kings! What reason do the dragons have for this quarrel? I have come here quickly out of compassion for you." (28)

"This big-bellied dragon and that small-bellied dragon—uncle and nephew—are fighting over their desire for treasure." (29)

The Awakened One, pitying the impatient dragons, called out, "The fool's mind stirs with anger, and though small at first, it grows into something great." (30)

"O many dragons! What joy do you see that invites such great suffering? Even if you lose this small seat, you must not be destroyed. If you destroy each other, you invite the unheard-of destruction of life." (31)

Thus the Clear-Eyed One spoke of the pains of hell, encouraged the dragons, and taught the path to human and heavenly rebirth, as well as Nirvana. (32)

All the dragons, taught the true Dharma by the Awakened One, the Two-Footed Supreme One, prostrated themselves and asked the Tathagata for forgiveness. (33)

All the dragons and serpents gathered together, reconciled with one another, and eighty crore beings all took refuge, (34)

declaring, "O dragons! We would rather give up our lives than fight over this seat." (35)

The two dragon kings, both desiring peace, took the supreme seat and offered it to the Buddha, saying, "Clear-Eyed One, please accept this seat with compassion." (36)

The Clear-Eyed One, the Right-Sighted One, remained silent, granting his consent. The two great serpents, knowing the Buddha's acceptance, were filled with joy. (37)

"Blessed One, please sit on this seat that the dragons yearn for, made of gleaming beryl." (38)

The dragons placed the seat in the center of the island. The Radiant One, the Dharma King, sat upon it. (39)

Eighty crore dragons, having pleased the Awakened One, offered him food and drink there. (40)

Eighty crore dragons, surrounding the Buddha's bowl, sat near the Supreme Buddha. (41)

At the mouth of the Kalyani River, there lived a naga king named Manichikka, along with his offspring and a great host of his kinsmen. (42) They had deep faith in the Buddha, held right views, and observed the precepts. When the Buddha came among the nagas, their devotion grew even stronger. (43) Seeing the Buddha’s miraculous power and compassion, and how even the serpents trembled in awe, they paid homage and sat down to make a request to the Blessed One: (44) “Out of compassion, you have already driven away the demons from this island. Now, for the nagas, this kindness is a second blessing to the land. (45) Great sage, World-Honored One, please extend this compassion further. I will serve the Buddha.” (46) The Buddha, compassionate toward all beings, heard the naga’s words. For the welfare of Lanka, he accepted his request. (47) After his meal, the Radiant Sage arose from his seat and spent the rest of the day in that part of the island. (48) The foremost of the enlightened passed the noon in the island and, with seeing eyes, entered the absorption of sublime abiding. (49) In the afternoon, the Victorious One declared to the nagas: “This seat should remain here. This Kiravihara tree should remain here. All of you nagas should wholly take refuge in this tree and this seat.” (50) Having thus spoken, the Awakened One instructed the nagas. Leaving them with the objects he had used, he then returned to Jeta’s Grove.

[End of the prophecy on subduing the dragons.]

Eight years after the Buddha's enlightenment, the dragon king Mani Akhika, along with five hundred monks, respectfully invited the great sage. (52)

The Buddha, endowed with great supernormal powers and accompanied by his followers, rose into the sky from Jeta's Grove and arrived at the Kaluganga River mouth in Lanka. (53)

There, the serpents built a jeweled hall upon the earth, covering it with garments of various colors and celestial robes. (54)

That hall was adorned with garlands of precious gems, flowers of many hues, and banners of various colors—every kind of ornament graced it. (55)

They spread fine cloth upon the couches, arranged seats, and invited the Sangha to sit, with the Buddha at the head. (56)

The Awakened One sat with the five hundred monks, entered into deep meditation, and suffused all directions with loving-kindness. (57)

The Buddha and his disciples entered meditation seven times, and at that very spot, the most excellent shrine—the Great Stupa—was established. (58)

The dragon king Mani Akhika offered a great gift of alms to the monks. The Awakened One and his disciples accepted the dragon's offering, and after the meal, he taught the Dharma to their delight. Then, with his disciples, he rose into the sky. (59)

The Buddha, compassionate toward the world, descended from the sky to the shrine at the Long Pool and entered meditation. (60)

The Radiant One, the King of Dharma, arose from meditation at that place and, walking through the air with his disciples, approached the site in the Great Cloud Grove where the Bodhi tree was to be established. (61)

There, the great Bodhi trees of the three previous Buddhas had stood. Going to that spot, he again entered meditation. (62)

At that time, the Buddha had already declared: "In the time of the three Buddhas, three Bodhi trees stood at this place. In the future, I too shall establish a Bodhi tree here." (63)

The Supreme One, the highest of beings, arose from meditation with his disciples and, with a joyful heart, went to the Great Cloud Grove. (64)

There too, the Buddha entered meditation with his disciples. Thus, the Radiant One, arising from meditation, declared: (65)

"The first guide of the world, Buddha Krakucchanda, sat at the seat prepared here and received this place. (66)

"The second guide of the world, Buddha Kanakamuni, sat at the seat prepared here and received this place. (67)

"The third guide of the world, Buddha Kasyapa, sat at the seat prepared here and received this place. (68)

"And I, Gotama, the Awakened One, the supreme one of the Sakyas, now sit on this seat and attain deep absorption." (69)
