(48) Thus many protectors of the earth, said to inherit the guardianship in this first age, came from the lineage of the Bodhisattva. (49) Indeed, all conditioned things are impermanent—they are subject to arising and passing away. Once born, they cease; their stilling brings true happiness. (50)

The son of Shining Jaw, the noble King Shuddhodana, ruled over the city of Kapilavastu. (51) A king named Bhadrika, a noble, ruled over Rajagriha, the finest city nestled among five mountains. (52) King Shuddhodana and King Bhadrika were close, trusted friends. When Bimbisara was eight years old, five wishes arose in his heart: (53) "May a noble father teach me the meaning of kingship; may the supreme one, the Buddha, be born in my land; (54) May the Thus-Gone One first see me and come to me; may the Buddha teach me the nectar of the Dharma, and may I understand that supreme truth." (55) These five wishes arose in Bimbisara's heart. When he turned fifteen, his father passed away, and he was anointed as king. (56) The world's guide, the Buddha, was born in that joyous kingdom, and the Thus-Gone One first approached him. He taught the nectar of the Dharma, and the lord of the earth understood it well. (57) At that time, the great hero was exactly thirty-five years old, and Bimbisara, the lord of the earth, was thirty. The Blessed One was five years older than Bimbisara. (58) The noble king ruled for fifty-two years, and his connection with the Buddha lasted thirty-seven of those years. (59) The noble King Ajatashatru ruled for thirty-two years; eight years after his anointing, the Awakened One had already entered final Nirvana. (60) After the Awakened One, the Blessed One, the supreme one, had passed into final Nirvana, this noble king still ruled for twenty-four years. (61)
