Tonsure Ceremony (剃髮儀式)

Chapter 5: Renouncing Family and Returning to Simplicity

The Venerable said:

"One who leaves home life transcends worldly conventions and becomes a field of merit for the world. A ruler cannot treat them as a subject, and a parent cannot treat them as a child. They deserve reverence and offerings from both humans and gods. Therefore, once you have shaved your head and donned the monastic robe, there is no obligation to bow even to your ruler or parents, let alone anyone else. However, your parents gave you life and raised you with deep kindness. You should go to a prominent place to bow and take leave of your parents and elders. Only then should you enter the meditation hall for them to shave your head."

After speaking, the practitioner stood up and was led by the guiding teacher out to the courtyard below. There, before the parents and elders, the practitioner made a bow, then knelt with palms pressed together. The guiding teacher instructed them to recite the verses of leaving family:

After finishing the hymn, the practitioner stood up. He took off his lay clothing and put on monastic robes, but did not put on the kasaya (Buddhist robe).
