> Residing at Qingyun Nunnery

> A small instruction. "Yesterday it rained, this morning it thundered—why harbor unnecessary doubts? A true man has aspirations that reach the sky—how laughable to be buried alive without cause. Is there anyone here who has not been buried alive?" After a long pause, he said, "Heavens, heavens."

> End of retreat, a brief instruction. He raised his staff upright and said: “This wooden companion may at times become rain and dew, nourishing all things; At times it appears as auspicious signs and blessings, broadly protecting all beings; Sometimes it encompasses the entire universe without a single thread leaking out; Sometimes it unfolds the Dharma realm, and all forms shine together. Even though principle and phenomena merge completely, and the correct and partial are both present, Tell me, what about this phrase for ending the retreat? Carrying a wooden staff across the shoulder, free and unconstrained— At ease, wandering east, west, south, and north.”

> A Small Investigation: A Case is raised. It is said, "Once there were two monks, each residing in their own hut, who had not seen each other for ten days. One day, they met. The monk from the upper hut asked, 'It has been a long time since we last met—what have you been doing in your hut?' The monk from the lower hut replied, 'I have been building a seamless tower in my hut.' The upper monk said, 'I would like to build one too—could you lend me your design?' The lower monk replied, 'Why didn't you say so earlier? It was just borrowed by someone else.' These two elders, although they clearly threaded the jade thread and subtly passed the golden needle, could not avoid dulling each other. I ask you all: the upper monk asked thus, and the lower monk answered thus—tell me, did he lend the design or not? If you can discern this point, I grant that you possess one eye."
