The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Miaoyong of Yuanhu is a compilation of the teachings of the eminent Linji Chan master Miaoyong from the Qing Dynasty, edited by his disciples Wujin, Wuyuan, and others. Completed during the Qing Dynasty, this work reflects the development of Chan Buddhism in the Jiangnan region at that time. Its contents primarily include Master Miaoyong’s Dharma discourses from the hall, exchanges of pointed dialogue, commentaries on ancient cases with verses, as well as letters of instruction, vividly embodying his Chan approach of directly pointing to the mind and realizing one’s inherent Buddha-nature. As an important Linji Chan text, this record not only transmits the essential teachings of Chan but also serves as a precious historical source for studying the thought and practice of Qing Dynasty Chan Buddhism, offering significant guidance for later students in their investigation of Chan principles.
