The monk Zhixu, having completed writing *The Buddha's Names*, lit incense and made vows.
Three sticks were offered to the Three Jewels, with the vow that together with all beings in the Dharma Realm, we may carry on the lineage of the Buddha, enter the treasury of wisdom, and ascend the gate of liberation.
Six sticks were offered in repentance for the sins of the six senses, with the vow that together with all beings in the Dharma Realm, we may constantly behold the Buddha's form, hear the Dharma's sound, smell the Dharma's fragrance, proclaim the Dharma's taste, wear the robe of shame and remorse, and awaken to the Tathagata's treasury.
Two sticks were offered in prayer for parents, relatives, the people of the nation and land, that they may enter the womb of the nine-petaled lotus and receive the blessings and protection of the Three Jewels.
Four sticks were offered for the protection of the permanent monastic community: for harmony in upholding the precepts, for pure-karma spiritual friends, for the strict purification of the Vinaya, for the pure assembly of the meditation hall cultivating the Mahayana, and for all the teachers in various duties, that their names may be inscribed upon lotus petals.
Three sticks were offered for the protection of the monk [Name], and all good spiritual friends, that they may enjoy physical health, abundant blessings, and proceed directly toward Bodhi.
May all merit thus accrued be universally dedicated to all sentient beings, that we may be reborn together in the Land of Peace and Nourishment.
