Vows Written in Blood for Elder Jigong of Xuehang Temple

In the spring of the year Jisi during the Chongzhen era, on the fifteenth day of the first month, the bhikṣu Zhi Xu, who upholds the Bodhisattva precepts, expounded the *Four-Part Vinaya* for his fellow bhikṣu Zhi Ji. He lit ten sticks of incense and made ten great vows:

First, I vow that all beings in the hell realms throughout the dharma realm may attain liberation together, never again experiencing the results [of their karma], and never again creating its causes.

Second, I vow that all beings in the hungry ghost realm may attain liberation together.

Third, I vow that all beings in the animal realm may attain liberation together.

Fourth, I vow that all asuras may abandon their habits of arrogance and pride.

Fifth, I vow that all human beings may give rise to the mind of enlightenment.

Sixth, I vow that all heavenly beings may permanently sever all outflows.

Seventh, I vow that all śrāvakas may turn from the lesser toward the greater.

Eighth, I vow that all pratyekabuddhas may give rise to great compassion.

Ninth, I vow that all bodhisattvas may exhaust the source of ignorance.

Tenth, I respectfully vow that all Tathāgatas may further increase their dharma joy.

Furthermore, I vow that through this merit, my fellow practitioner Zhi Ji may wash away the worldly views and knowledge, uproot all vague and erroneous thoughts; may he clearly and resolutely shoulder the true dharma, not sparing his body or life; may he sincerely and earnestly take pity on sentient beings, skillfully liberating them.

If, from beginningless time until yesterday, there is any evil karma I have created that should bear fruit, may Zhi Xu receive it all in their stead, enabling them to attain liberation. All the good karma I have created that should bear fruit, I universally dedicate to all sentient beings throughout the dharma realm, that they may together achieve perfect enlightenment.

From this day forward, may they uphold the precepts purely, undisturbed by worldly defilements; may they guard their dignified conduct meticulously, not harming even the smallest insect; may they raise the sublime banner of the true dharma and become a model for humans and gods.

I further vow that Zhi Xu may forever, throughout the empty space and the entire dharma realm, within the three lower realms, universally take the place of all sentient beings, enduring immeasurable suffering for as many inconceivable, inexpressible eons as there are specks of dust in the ocean, fully tasting every torment, without ever growing weary or regretful. Only when not a single sentient being in the dharma realm remains who has not become a Buddha, will I then seek liberation.

Through the merit of this mind of aspiration and these vows, I respectfully pray that all Buddhas, with great compassion, bestow their blessings and, with great pity, deliver and rescue us. May each and every word emit boundless light; may each and every light illuminate countless lands; may they, in the space of a single thought, pervade the entire dharma realm, universally bestowing upon all sentient beings the ultimate joy of the dharma, so that all that has feeling and all that is without feeling may together perfect the wisdom of all seeds.
