### 閱律禮懺總別二疏庚午

> General and Specific Ritual Texts for Vinaya Recitation and Repentance<note place="inline">Gengwu Year</note>

> We take refuge in the Three Jewels, and in the fellow practitioners present before us. With humble reverence, we recall the Buddha's final and clear instruction: “Take the precepts as your teacher.” From the precepts arises meditative concentration, the initial foundation of the undefiled path. Grieving that the world has torn apart these guiding principles, yet rejoicing that we still encounter the true teaching, we therefore arouse a supreme aspiration. With one mind, we open and read the scriptures; as we approach the end of our review, we repent and make vows. The Bhikshu received the tally of days, then lit three sticks of incense on his head and fourteen sticks on his arm. Zhi Xu lit twenty-eight sticks of incense on his arm, Xing Hong lit ten sticks, and Dao Yuan lit four sticks. Together with the rest of us, each for the sake of the four kinds of kindness and the three realms of existence, and for all beings in the Dharma Realm, we arouse the unconditional compassion and the empathetic compassion of shared essence. Equal to the minds of all Buddhas, we make the uncreated vows. Diligently and with sincerity, we cultivate the repentance practice of the Compassionate Samadhi. We reverently pray: May the Great Compassion spread far and wide, rescuing beings drowning in the turbid kalpa of decline; may the mysterious spiritual power silently bestow blessings and wisdom upon our beginner’s hearts. May the hidden essence of the Vinaya be revealed, so that Dhyana meditation and doctrinal study shine forth together; may the grand work of filling the Buddha’s place be accomplished, so that secret personal attainments and mere literary imitation both disappear. May those who see and hear attain true rejoicing, and those who study may practice in reality. May this perfectly match Amitabha’s power of reception, and hold the certificate for the adornments of the Pure Land.

稽首毗柰邪，無漏清淨藏，建立及宏通，并如說行者。我今為自身，亦為諸含識，彙釋成集要，唯垂哀攝受。

> I bow to the Vinaya, The pure treasury free from all taints, For its establishment, propagation, and practice, Just as it was taught. Now, for myself, And for all sentient beings, I compile and explain these essential points, Humbly asking for compassion, acceptance, and guidance.

> Zhi Xu and all beings in the Dharma Realm, from beginningless time until now, have been confused about the nature of tranquil cessation, opening the gate of the outflows, turning our backs on the city of liberation, and creating three kinds of karmic offenses. Some do not know the sacred precepts; others receive them but do not uphold them, betraying the Buddha’s kindness and depleting their merit and wisdom. As a result, our bodies are afflicted with many illnesses, our minds are clouded by ignorance, and we are born in a late age overrun by demonic forces. Fortunately, we have been blessed with profound compassion, enabling us to encounter the true teachings. Relying on a trace of good roots, we have come to understand the meaning somewhat. Thus, we have aroused the mind to protect the Dharma and established the great vow to spread it widely. Yet, because our karma is heavy, our obstructions deep, our virtue thin, and our understanding shallow, we feel deep shame and sincerely pray for your blessings. I light three incense sticks, universally dedicated to the kings and ministers of state, my parents and relatives, and the faithful donors and protectors, offered to the inexhaustible Three Jewels in the ten directions. I light another twenty-five incense sticks, offered to our original teacher, Shakyamuni, with the wish that the True Dharma may long abide. To the Seven Buddhas of the Past, with the wish that the precepts and Dharma may be transmitted. To Buddha Amitabha, the Guide, with the wish that we may be reborn together in the Pure Land. To the Medicine Master Buddha of Lapis Lazuli Light, with the wish for perfect fulfillment of the precepts. To Maitreya, the Kind One, with the wish that he may constantly come to teach. To the Thirty-Five Buddhas, with the wish that all obstacles be eliminated. I also offer incense to the Sutra on the Visualization of the Space-Store Bodhisattva, with the wish for the complete achievement of the precept-body. To the Treasury of Vinaya Teachings, with the wish that all transgressions be forever purified. To the Space-Store Bodhisattva, with the wish that heavy karmic offenses be diminished. To the Earth-Store Fundamental Vow, with the wish that my fixed karma be transformed. To Manjushri and Samantabhadra, the Great Beings, with the wish for the perfection of wisdom and practice. To Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta, the Great Beings, with the wish for guidance to Bliss. To Bhaisajyaraja and Bhaisajyasamudgata, the Great Beings, with the wish for the practice of Dharma-offering. To Vajragarbha, Cundi, and the Great Being Sovereign of All Dharanis, with the wish for attainment of the great Dharani. To Master Upali, with the wish for the supreme Vinaya conduct. To Venerable Kashyapa and Ananda, and to all great Dharma Masters who translated, received, and upheld the teachings, with the wish for unhindered teaching and wandering. Furthermore, I offer incense to Master Daguan Ke, repaying his virtue in printing the Great Canon and revitalizing the Sangha spirit. To Master Lianchi Hong, repaying his kindness as my model for the tradition. To Master Hanshan Qing, my early teacher, repaying his virtue in guiding my initial inspiration and receiving me in dreams. To Master Xueling Jun, repaying his kindness in granting me ordination. To Master Guide Xian, repaying his virtue in verifying my study of the precepts. To Master Wuyi Yi, repaying his kindness in encouraging the publication. To my Dharma brothers Bi Ruggiao and Guiyi Chou, repaying their efforts in consultation and revision. To the present six masters and all future fellow practitioners of the good path, with the wish that we may together support the Dharma-realm. To Masters Ji Xian Xian and Jing Kong Miao, and to all supportive wise teachers, with the wish that we may all enter the Dharma-stream. I humbly pray that all beings may awaken to the perfect and penetrating gate, realize the King of Samadhis, break through the twenty-five forms of existence, and reveal the twenty-five aspects of self-nature. May we all enter the lotus land together and equally accomplish the Buddha Way.
