> Prayer for Parents' Deliverance

> \*\*A Humble Request for Blessings for My Parents\*\* I, Zhi Xu, of little worth and wisdom, was born in the year 1599. At the time, my beloved parents were both forty years of age and had only me as their sole child, raising me with the utmost care and devotion. When I turned twenty, my father passed away. I had not been able to show him a single day's filial respect as my duty required, leaving me with a pain that cannot be measured, a regret that will last to the end of my days. Later, I encountered the Buddha's teachings and came to understand that worldly filial piety is not the ultimate form. At twenty-four, I left my mother and went into retreat, hoping to quickly attain real spiritual fruit and repay the Four Kindnesses upon my Enlightenment. But my heavy karma and stubborn obstacles kept me stuck in the ordinary world far too long. By the time I was twenty-eight, my dear mother also passed away. Looking back on my practice of the supreme form of filial piety—that of transcending this world—I found myself bereft and failing, only deepening my immeasurable grief and falling ever deeper into a net of sorrows. It's now been ten years since I became a monk, yet I have accomplished nothing worthy in purity. I wring my hands and search my own heart, feeling shame and dread. Next year, on the first day of the sixth month, it will be the seventh anniversary of my mother, Golden Lotus, and on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the fifteenth anniversary of my father, Zhong Zhifeng. My own spiritual strength is weak and limited, so I must rely upon the compassionate support of my fellow monks and teachers. The supreme gift is the gift of the Dharma, and should I keep it hidden and secretly stingy with common folk? Leaning on the compassion that sees all beings as one body, I pray for blessings that are unconditional, liberating from suffering and granting support. If by this life I attain true liberation, I vow to be like a shadow or an echo for others everywhere in all future lives. But if I slide back this time, I vow to forever suffer willingly all the pains of existence on behalf of others. For the sake of my parents, I have recited the Mantra to Extinguish Fixed Karma twenty million times, the Golden Light Sutra's Emptiness Section two thousand times, and the Brahma Net Sutra's first chapter one thousand times. I sincerely beg my fellow practitioners to aid each other in this excellent cause, so that we may all step together into the vast ocean of Amitabha's Vows.
