Biography of Nun Faxin of a Nunnery in Hedong, Tang Dynasty

Fa Xin, also known as Lianxing, was from Hedong. He regularly recited the Lotus Sutra. In the early years of the Wude era, he prepared a quiet room and paid several times the usual rate to commission someone to copy the entire seven-volume sutra for him. He would bathe and purify himself before each session. It took eight years to complete, and he treated the sutra with the utmost reverence.

The monk Fa Duan from Longmen heard about this and secretly coveted it, wishing to borrow it for use as a lecture text. Fa Xin reluctantly agreed, though it was against his wishes. When Fa Duan opened the case and unrolled the scrolls, he saw only yellow paper, with no writing at all. Fa Duan was filled with shame and panic, not knowing what to do, and sent it back.

Fa Xin suspected it had been defiled, which caused this to happen. Facing the original text, he wept bitterly, placed it on his head, and performed walking meditation for seven days and nights without interruption. When he opened it again, the writing had returned to its original state.
