Eight: Biography of Miaokong, a Nun from a Certain Convent in Xunyang, Tang Dynasty

Miaokong was from Xunyang. He ate only vegetables and wore clothes of paper, with few desires and a contented heart. In his daily life, he devoted himself solely to reading the Lotus Sutra, with such sincere and earnest intent that he would not accept even a single verse from any other scripture. He often made the vow that, at the end of this physical life, he would be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. Through silent contemplation and inward illumination, he deeply understood the Samadhi of Buddha-Recollection. At the time of his passing, purple clouds covered his room, and a wondrous fragrance spread throughout the entire county. Later, a nun who was his disciple dreamed of him saying: "Through the merit accumulated from a lifetime of upholding the Lotus Sutra, I have been reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, attaining the mid-grade of the highest rank." If one also comprehends its profound meaning, one is certain to ascend to the highest grade of the highest rank.
