9. Biography of Great Clarity, Nun of Xihe in Fenzhou, Tang Dynasty

Daming was from Fenzhou. He met the Chan master Daochuo, who was lecturing on the Amitayurdhyana Sutra, and through this, he learned the practice of Buddha-recitation. He lived in Xihe and vowed to be reborn in the Pure Land. Every time he entered his room to pay homage and recite, he would first put on clean clothes and place a piece of aloeswood in his mouth. He would then gather his mind in stillness and recite his daily practice. For three or four years, he continued this without interruption. On the day of his passing, everyone suddenly smelled the fragrance of aloeswood filling the room. Shortly after, a light like a cloud appeared and gradually faded away toward the west.
