> Biography of Zhenru, a Nun from the Riverbank in the Baoying Era of the Tang Dynasty

> Zhenru, a native of Gong County, was born into the Li family and later married into the He Ruo family. She renounced worldly life to become a nun. On the seventh day of the seventh month in the first year of the Tianbao era of the Tang dynasty, while washing at the hermitage where she lived, Zhenru suddenly saw a five-colored cloud approaching from the east. From within the cloud, an invisible hand emerged and handed her a small bag, saying, "Treasure this, and be careful not to speak of it." At the end of the Tianbao era, during the rebellion of An Lushan, Zhenru wandered and eventually settled in An'yi County, Chuzhou. On the eighteenth night of the eleventh month in the second year of the Shangyuan era, she suddenly saw two figures in black robes leading her southeast for about fifty or sixty paces. There, she came upon a splendidly adorned pavilion with strict guards. The black-robed figures said, "This is the City of Transformation." Inside the hall, a person dressed in blue robes and wearing a jeweled crown, who called himself the Celestial Emperor, was seated. More than twenty others, similarly dressed, were referred to as the Celestial Beings. They summoned Zhenru forward. The Celestial Beings said to one another, "The killings in the mortal realm have become excessive, and the stench of blood has reached the heavens. We must use divine treasures to suppress it." One celestial being said, "Use the third treasure." Another said, "The baleful energy is currently too strong; the third treasure is insufficient. We must grant the second treasure." They agreed and presented the treasure to Zhenru, saying, "Go and instruct Prefect Cui Shen to present this to the Son of Heaven. The small bag given to you earlier contains five treasures that ministers may see. These eight treasures are only for the ruler to behold. Do not treat them lightly!" They explained the names and uses of the treasures to Zhenru and then had the black-robed figures escort her back. The next day, Zhenru went to the county office and reported what had happened. The prefect, suspecting sorcery, sent his assistant Lu Heng to investigate. Zhenru showed him the five treasures from the small bag. When she took out the treasure disk and shone it, its radiance pierced the sun, stretching beyond sight. Astonished, Lu Heng reported to Cui Shen, who then informed the military governor Cui Yuan. Cui Yuan summoned Zhenru to his headquarters and insisted on seeing the treasures. Reluctantly, Zhenru brought out the eight treasures. Placed under the sun, they emitted a white aura that filled the sky; placed in a dark room, they shone like the moon. Cui Shen sent Lu Heng to accompany Zhenru in presenting the treasures to the emperor. At that time, Emperor Suzong was ill in bed. He summoned the crown prince and said, "You were once the Prince of Chu before becoming heir, and now treasures have been obtained from Chuzhou. This is Heaven's gift to you." Emperor Daizong received the treasures with reverence and subsequently changed the era name to Baoying. He renamed An'yi County as Baoying County, bestowed upon Zhenru the title "Great Master Baohe," and ordered the establishment of the Baoying Golden Wheel Temple in Chang'an. The place where Zhenru lived and discovered the treasures was by the riverbank, where the scenery was lush and vibrant. It is said that merchants from the Western Regions passing by would always stop to gaze and pay their respects.
