> 23\. Biography of Nun Yuanji of Jingju Temple in Wenzhou, Tang Dynasty

元機，瑞安人，姓戴氏，乃永嘉大師女弟。景雲中，得度，常習定於大日山石窟中。一日，忽念曰：「法性湛然，本無去住；厭喧趨寂，豈為達耶？」乃往參雪峰，峰問：「甚處來？」機曰：「大日山來。」峰曰：「日出也未？」機曰：「若出則鎔卻雪峰。」峰曰：「汝名甚麼？」曰：「元機。」峰曰：「日織多少？」機曰：「寸絲不挂。」遂禮拜退。纔行三五步，峰召曰：「袈裟角拖地也。」機回首，峰曰：「大好寸絲不挂。」即於言下契悟。後住溫州淨居寺，倒立而化。永嘉喝曰：「汝生也顛倒，死也顛倒！」乃仆。殯後，一夕大雷電，柩忽不見，尋之，則在大日巖竇，因名其巖曰機巖。

> Yuanji, a native of Rui'an with the surname Dai, was a female disciple of Master Yongjia. During the Jingyun era, she received ordination and often practiced meditation in the stone caves of Mount Dairi. One day, she suddenly thought to herself: "The nature of reality is clear and tranquil, fundamentally without coming or going. To detest noise and seek silence—is that truly understanding?" She then went to visit Xuefeng. Xuefeng asked, "Where have you come from?" Yuanji replied, "From Mount Dairi." Xuefeng said, "Has the sun risen there yet?" Yuanji said, "If it had risen, it would melt Xuefeng." Xuefeng asked, "What is your name?" She said, "Yuanji." Xuefeng said, "How much do you weave in a day?" Yuanji said, "Not a single thread hangs." She then bowed and began to leave. After taking only three or five steps, Xuefeng called out, "Your robe is dragging on the ground." Yuanji turned her head to look. Xuefeng said, "So much for 'not a single thread hangs'." At these words, she attained awakening. Later, she resided at Jingju Temple in Wenzhou. She passed away standing on her head. Yongjia shouted, "You lived upside down, and you die upside down!" Then she fell over. After her burial, one night there was a great thunderstorm. Her coffin suddenly vanished. Searching for it, they found it in a cave on Mount Dairi. They therefore named that cliff "Ji Cliff."
