### 二二、唐藤州通善寺尼智首傳

> 22\. Biography of Nun Zhishou of Tongshen Temple in Tengzhou, Tang Dynasty

智首，不知何許人。出家學法，通曉毘尼，住藤州通善寺。攝化道俗，多所啟悟。時有日本僧普照、榮睿，入唐求法，懇請揚州大明寺鑒真律師東渡傳律。律師愍其為法心誠，率弟子多人，六次開纜，皆遇難緣折回。最後七次，於天寶十二載，又結四十一人，橫渡滄溟。智首與同輩三人，亦隨法輿而往，冀以大法化彼女眾。雖其餘道蹟湮沒不彰，然以愛道孱弱之軀，而能犯萬里鯨波，投身異域，建立法幢，其志節已足多矣！

> Zhi Shou, of unknown origin. After leaving home to study the Dharma, he became well-versed in the Vinaya and resided at Tongshen Temple in Tengzhou. He guided both monastics and laypeople, enlightening many. At that time, Japanese monks Puzhao and Rongrui came to the Tang Dynasty seeking the Dharma and earnestly requested the Vinaya master Jianzhen of Yangzhou's Daming Temple to travel east to transmit the Vinaya. Moved by their sincere devotion to the Dharma, Master Jianzhen led many disciples and attempted to set sail six times, but each time encountered obstacles and had to turn back. Finally, on the seventh attempt in the twelfth year of the Tianbao era, he gathered forty-one people and crossed the vast ocean. Zhi Shou, along with three companions, also followed the Dharma carriage, hoping to spread the great teachings to the women there. Although the rest of his journey remains obscure, for someone of frail constitution to brave the perilous waves across ten thousand miles, venture into a foreign land, and establish the banner of the Dharma—his determination and integrity are truly commendable!
