> 21\. Biography of Nun Wujinzang of Caohou Village in Shaozhou, Tang Dynasty

無盡藏，韶州曹侯村人，儒士劉志略之姑。初，六祖自黃梅得法，回行抵村，人無知者。劉志略禮遇獨厚，無盡藏常誦大涅槃經，六祖暫聽，即知妙義，遂為解說。無盡藏乃執卷問字，六祖曰：「字即不識，義即請問。」無盡藏曰：「字尚不識，焉能會義？」六祖曰：「諸佛妙理，非關文字。」無盡藏驚異之，徧告里中耆德云：「此是有道之士，宜請供養。」有魏武侯玄孫曹叔良及居民，競來瞻禮。時寶林古寺，自隋末兵火已廢，遂於故基，重建梵宇。延六祖居之，俄成寶坊。

> Wujinzang was a native of Caohou Village in Shaozhou, the aunt of the Confucian scholar Liu Zhilue. Initially, when the Sixth Patriarch obtained the Dharma at Huangmei and returned to the village, no one knew of him. Liu Zhilue treated him with exceptional respect and hospitality. Wujinzang often recited the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra. The Sixth Patriarch listened briefly and immediately grasped its profound meaning, subsequently explaining it to her. Wujinzang then held up the scripture and asked him about the characters. The Sixth Patriarch said, "I do not recognize the characters, but if you have questions about the meaning, please ask." Wujinzang said, "If you don't even recognize the characters, how can you understand the meaning?" The Sixth Patriarch replied, "The subtle principles of all Buddhas are not dependent on written words." Astonished, Wujinzang informed all the respected elders in the village, saying, "This is a man of the Way; we should invite and make offerings to him." Cao Shuliang, a descendant of Marquis Wu of Wei, and the local residents all came to pay their respects. At that time, the ancient Baolin Monastery had been destroyed by warfare since the end of the Sui dynasty. They then rebuilt the temple on its original foundation and invited the Sixth Patriarch to reside there. Soon, it became a revered place of practice.
