### 二九、唐婺州金華山尼實際傳

> Twenty-Nine: Biography of Nun Shiji of Jinhua Mountain in Wuzhou, Tang Dynasty

實際，氏族不詳。通曉禪理，隨方化導，成就法事。婺州金華山俱胝和尚初住庵時，實際忽自遠方來，戴笠子，執錫繞俱胝三匝，曰：「道得即下笠子。」如是三問，俱胝皆無對。乃曰：「日勢稍晚，何不且住？」實際曰：「道得即住。」俱胝又無對。實際去後，俱胝嘆曰：「我雖處丈夫形，而無丈夫氣，不如棄庵往諸方參尋善知識去。」其夜，山神告曰：「不須離此，將有肉身菩薩來為和尚說法。」逾旬，果天龍和尚到庵，俱胝即迎禮，具陳前事。龍竪一指示之，俱胝當下大悟。自此凡有學者參問，俱胝唯舉一指，無別提唱。

> As for Shiji, her clan origins are unknown. She was well-versed in the principles of Zen and guided others according to their circumstances, helping them accomplish the Dharma work. When the monk Juedi of Jinhua Mountain in Wuzhou first settled in his hermitage, Shiji suddenly arrived from afar. Wearing a bamboo hat and holding a monk's staff, she circled Juedi three times and said, "If you can speak the Way, I will take off my hat." She asked this three times, but Juedi had no answer each time. He then said, "The sun is setting, why not stay for a while?" Shiji replied, "If you can speak the Way, I will stay." Again, Juedi had no answer. After Shiji left, Juedi sighed and said, "Although I have the form of a man, I lack the spirit of a true practitioner. I should abandon this hermitage and seek out wise teachers elsewhere." That night, a mountain deity appeared to him and said, "There is no need to leave. A living Bodhisattva will come to teach you the Dharma." Ten days later, Monk Tianlong indeed arrived at the hermitage. Juedi welcomed him with reverence and recounted the earlier events. Tianlong simply raised one finger in response. At that moment, Juedi experienced a profound awakening. From then on, whenever students came to seek guidance, Juedi would only raise one finger, offering no other explanations.
