> 30\. Biography of Dharma-Empty, Nun of Jian'an Temple in Tang Dynasty

> Fakong, whose lay surname was Han, was from Xuanzhou. In his youth, he left his family and was ordained at Jian'an Temple, located over a hundred \*li\* southwest of Mount Wutai. He later received full ordination at Qihuan Temple. He made reciting the Lotus Sutra his daily practice. Afterwards, he traveled to study the sutras and monastic rules, yet after several decades, he had still not experienced any profound awakening. He knew his own nature lacked sharp wisdom and that he had no strong karmic foundation from past lives. He once heard that on Mount Wutai, Manjushri Bodhisattva manifests in various forms to aid all beings. It was said that there was a monk named Daochao who had no other special practices; he simply resided at Huayan Temple for over twenty years without ever leaving the mountain. After his life ended, he was reborn in Maitreya's Inner Court in the Tushita Heaven. A celestial being there told Daochao, "In the human world, you performed no extraordinary deeds. It was solely through relying on the power of Manjushri Bodhisattva's realm that you were able to be reborn here. You should now return to the human world to guide the fourfold assembly, letting them hear of Manjushri's merits. It is hoped that by briefly ascending this mountain, they can greatly eliminate their various transgressions, thereby mending their heavenly conduct." Daochao complied and, without abandoning his celestial reward, descended to inform the human world. Upon hearing this, Fakong thought: "The great vows and realm of Manjushri Bodhisattva are inconceivable." He felt a rare and profound aspiration. He further reflected: "Since beginningless time in the cycle of birth and death, I have wandered through the three realms without attaining liberation; both good and evil karma are created by the mind." He then made a great vow to go to Mount Wutai, determined to seek the great sage, hoping for his compassionate guidance. He made this vow together with his sister, a nun, and in the fourth year of the Yuanhe era (809 CE), they arrived at the mountain to make a pilgrimage. They toured all five peaks, witnessing various manifestations. Later, in a deep forest in front of the Sanquan Temple northwest of Huayan Temple, they encountered an old man who said to Fakong, "You should reside here to practice. You will certainly attain a supreme fruit." Having said this, he vanished. Fakong knew this was an instruction from the great sage and wept bitterly with tears like rain. After a long while, he began to deeply regret and reproach himself for his evil karma and obstructions, vowing to eliminate them. He then settled in that very place, building a simple thatched hut to live in. He diligently cultivated the three karmas (of body, speech, and mind), never slacking from dawn till dusk. On the fifteenth day of the second month in the eighth year of Yuanhe (813 CE), he took off the robes he was wearing and instructed his disciples to deliver them all to the permanent community for the use of the assembly. He then gathered everyone to bid farewell. When asked the reason, Fakong announced: "Since I settled here, I have received instruction from the great sage. He taught me the four characters 'Miao Fa Lian Hua' (Wonderful Dharma Lotus Flower), opening the Buddha's knowledge and vision, making me pure and unstained, enabling rebirth in the Pure Land. All of you must strive diligently; do not let this opportunity pass in vain." Having spoken, he passed away, seated upright as if still alive. The assembly then cremated him and collected over a thousand \*śarīra\* relics. The fourfold assembly divided them to use for offerings.
