> Guangjue was the daughter of the Gong family from Chongming County in Zhili Province. Her father, Gong Yikui, also known by his literary name Mengxuan, was a widely respected gentleman in the local community. Her mother was from the Shi family. Guangjue was born in the year 1599 of the Wanli era. By the age of twelve, she had already abstained from eating meat. Together with her cousin Guangyao, she diligently studied sutras and mantras, reverently paying homage to the Buddha morning and evening, and vowed to remain chaste and unmarried. Her parents and other relatives found this difficult to accept and tried various means to persuade her, but could not change her mind. At the age of twenty-eight, she shaved her head and took monastic vows. That same year, she accompanied her uncle to a nunnery. Earlier, her father, Mengxuan, had spoken of the excellence of the Xiaoyi Nunnery, which filled Guangjue with great joy and determination, and she resolved to settle there. While still living at home, she served her parents as if they were her teachers. After leaving home to become a monastic, she served the abbess of Xiaoyi Nunnery as if she were her own parent. She upheld the pure precepts with unwavering dedication, earning admiration from near and far. Countless people in Chongming were inspired and moved to develop faith because of her. However, her constitution was frail, and she pushed herself relentlessly, disregarding her own well-being. Eventually, she fell ill. After a prolonged period, she refused medicine, focusing her mind solely on preparing for the end. When her father, Mengxuan, heard of her illness, he came with her mother to visit. She said, "When I first shaved my head under the nun, it did not fully accord with my aspiration." She then specially kept a monastic robe and informed Yunqi, "The final step rests with you, Master, as prescribed by the Buddha's teachings." Yunqi consented. From then on, she spoke no more, her breath faint and lingering like a thread. Suddenly, she sat upright in full lotus posture and said, "I wish to see the abbess." When the abbess arrived, Guangjue joined her palms in gratitude and bid farewell. Next, an image of Amitabha Buddha welcoming beings to the Pure Land was set up before her. She smiled serenely, gazing intently with focused attention, joining her palms in devotion. Then she asked for water to wash her hands, put on fresh, clean robes, took her prayer beads, and sat upright facing the Buddha, as if entering meditative absorption. Those attending her, concerned she might topple over, tried to support her with pillows on either side. She waved her hand and said, "There is no need for this." As everyone gathered around to assist in recitation, she waved her hand again and said, "I have my own refuge; do not trouble yourselves." She remained seated in lotus posture, unmoving, for over two days and nights, softly reciting the Buddha's name until her voice gradually faded, and she peacefully passed away. This occurred on the seventh day of the second month in the year 1611 of the Wanli era. She had been a monastic for six years and was thirty-two years old in worldly age.
