### 八〇、明蘇州寒山庵尼竺禮傳（附．崇範傳）

> Eighty: Biography of Nun Zhu Li of Hanshan Nunnery in Suzhou (with attached biography of Chong Fan)

竺禮，姓葉氏，蘇州東洞庭人。幼納周聘，周子無行，禮泣曰：「忍以此身自污耶！」誓死不與成禮。久之，周子死，父母欲改適。又泣曰：「忍以一身許二姓耶？」欲引決，父母彊之，乃祝髮為尼。又崇範，姓賀氏，聘於張。將成禮，夫卒，範曰：「吾已心許之，不可不成禮。」遂服衰麻以往，撫棺慟哭。持喪三年畢，亦為尼。與竺禮並居寒山庵，二人自力衣食，戒行凜然，年並八十餘而卒。

> Zhu Li, whose family name was Ye, was from East Dongting in Suzhou. In her youth, she was betrothed to a man named Zhou, but he was of poor character. Li wept and said, "How could I bear to let this body of mine be defiled?" She vowed to die rather than go through with the marriage. After a long time, Zhou died, and her parents wished to arrange another marriage for her. Again she wept, saying, "How could I bear to pledge this one body to a second family?" She wished to end her own life, but her parents forced her to relent. Instead, she shaved her head and became a nun. There was also Chong Fan, whose family name was He. She was betrothed to a man named Zhang. Just before the wedding ceremony, her fiancé passed away. Fan said, "I have already given my heart to him; I cannot fail to complete the ceremony." So she put on mourning garments and went to his home, weeping bitterly before his coffin. She observed the mourning rites for three years, after which she too became a nun. Both Zhu Li and Chong Fan lived together at Hanshan Convent. They supported themselves through their own labor, and their discipline was strict and pure. Both lived to be over eighty years old before passing away.
