### 八四、明常州楞伽庵尼慧貞傳

慧貞，常州宦族之女，自幼言動不妄，願出家。父母聽之，送入楞伽庵，遂朝夕持誦金剛經。有同庵尼以穢事敗，波及貞，時適患目，因憤恚俱瞽。如是三載，誦經如故。一夜，夢金剛神謂曰：「汝行無虧，當還爾明。」兩目忽開。歷年九十，無疾坐化。按：昔崔相公群問如會禪師曰：「師以何得？」曰：「見性得。」師方病眼，公訊曰：「既云見性，奈眼何？」師曰：「見性非眼，眼病何害。」此尼雙瞳再朗，特明持驗不爽。若論得道，不在有眼無眼。

> Hui Zhen, the daughter of an official family in Changzhou, was a girl of few words and careful actions from childhood, and she wished to leave home to become a nun. Her parents consented and sent her to the Lengjia Nunnery, where she devoted herself morning and evening to reciting the Diamond Sutra. A nun from the same nunnery was involved in a scandalous affair, and Hui Zhen was implicated. At that time, she happened to suffer from an eye ailment, and in her anger and resentment, she became completely blind. For three years, she continued reciting the sutra as before. One night, she dreamed of the Vajra Deity, who said to her, "Your conduct is blameless; I shall restore your sight." Suddenly, both her eyes opened. She lived to the age of ninety and passed away peacefully while sitting in meditation. Note: In the past, Minister Cui Qun asked Chan Master Ruhui, "Master, what have you attained?" The master replied, "I have attained insight into my true nature." At the time, the master was suffering from an eye ailment. The minister inquired, "Since you speak of seeing your true nature, what about your eyes?" The master said, "Seeing one's true nature is not a matter of the eyes; what harm is there in an eye ailment?" This nun's eyes regained their sight, clearly demonstrating the unfailing efficacy of upholding the sutra. However, when it comes to attaining the Way, it is not about having eyes or not having eyes.
