> Eighty-Three: Biography of the One-Eyed Vajra, the Nun of Shuijing Nunnery in Guide

> One-Eyed Vajra was a man of the Wanli era, who lived at the Crystal Hermitage outside the city of Guide Prefecture. Because he had once worked as a goldsmith and had lost an eye, he was given this name. His nature was simple and unpretentious. Apart from plain food and coarse clothing, anything given to him by others, he would distribute entirely to support monks and nuns who were in need. Whenever he held a gathering to give teachings, the faithful would gather around him. One scholar asked, "Why does the Diamond Sutra have thirty-two sections?" He replied, "One principle runs through it all—this is true for both Confucianism and Buddhism. Why make so many divisions?" Then he spoke a verse: "The Buddha's Diamond Sutra, wondrous beyond compare, A single word awakens, transcending sound and hearing. If one truly grasps the Diamond's intent, Why divide the thirty-two into parts?" A monk asked, "Why is it called 'Vajra' (Diamond)?" He replied, "Everyone has the Vajra within—why ask in such a way?" Then he spoke a verse: "If Vajra indeed is Vajra, Forged a thousand times, it never breaks. Shattering emptiness, not a speck remains, Now only the Buddha's light is seen." Another person said, "Master, you understand the Buddha's teachings so well—why do you not appear in a male form?" He replied, "Forms have male and female, but nature has no this or that. Do not see them as different." Then he spoke a verse: "Why distinguish true from false in male or female? Who, after all, is the one appearing as Guanyin? When the body is shed, all is useless— Now tell me, is this form male or female?" He responded to every question with extraordinary clarity and insight, and countless people from near and far took refuge in him. When he was over seventy, he foretold the time of his passing. A flame appeared at the tip of his nose, and he sat upright, closed his eyes, and peacefully departed. He left one final verse: "Once cremated, gone forever into emptiness, Yet wherever I am, it is never empty. I go, I come, still I am myself— Like lightning's flash, like a bubble's shadow, all the same."
