> Biographies of Nuns: Chao Yuan of Zhengjue Nunnery in Dantu

超元，字佛機，丹徒人，嗣法鶴林中樸，隱住正覺庵。有竹篦子頌曰：「拈起吹毛劍，魔佛皆膽戰。擬議問如何，雷聲轟閃電。」又趙州勘婆子頌曰：「勘破婆子，公案兩重。山崩地裂，杲日當空。」又臨濟見僧入門便喝頌曰：「鐵牛踏破澄潭月，石虎巖前吼不徹。黑漆崑崙沒處藏，百獸聞之皆腦裂。」

> Chao Yuan, whose courtesy name was Foji, was a native of Dantu. He inherited the Dharma from Zhonglin Pu of the Crane Forest. He lived in seclusion at Zhengjue Nunnery. His verse on the Bamboo Whisk says: "Lifting the sharp sword of wisdom, demons and Buddhas alike tremble in fear. Should one hesitate to ask 'how'—thunder roars, lightning flashes!" His verse on Zhao Zhou's Examination of the Old Woman says: "Having seen through the old woman, the case carries a double weight. Mountains crumble, the earth splits—the bright sun hangs in the sky." His verse on Linji's shout upon seeing a monk enter says: "The iron ox tramples the moon in the clear pond; the stone tiger roars without end before the cliff. The black-lacquered Kunlun has no place to hide; all beasts hearing it split their heads!"
