Preface to the Table of Contents of the Great Treasures of Sacred Teachings

I take refuge in the Perfectly Enlightened One, The wondrous treasury of the Thus-Come One’s Dharma, And the great bodhisattvas of the ten directions— The true and holy assembly of the Three Jewels.

Now, with this sacred Dharma treasure, I vow to make a wondrous and noble connection.

If someone were to use a single strand of fur To measure the vastness of space, Or to describe the summit of Mount Sumeru— Where all celestial beings dwell— Or to point to the lair of a great dragon fish In the surging waves of the ocean, That vast and sublime place cannot be fully described In just a few words.

Yet, even in brief summary, The essential meaning is no false or absurd exaggeration. Out of compassion for those who never encounter this Dharma— Who stand at the shore and turn away in despair— (Note: During the degenerate age, there may be those who, though safe and leisurely, sadly refuse to open a sutra.) Though they are always near this precious treasure, They go through life empty-handed. (Note: This refers to those who have not yet read the sutras.)

But anyone who simply lays eyes on it once Has already planted the root of enlightenment.

For faithful joy-seekers who haven't the time to read every word, It is like finding a piece of jade from Mount Kun or a wish-fulfilling jewel in the vast ocean— Whatever they seek, they will find. (Note: This benefits those who haven't thoroughly read the scriptures.) Open the treasury, and there is always something to gain.

For those widely learned and well-read (Note: This benefits those who have already thoroughly read the scriptures.)— Who already understand the Dragon Repository— They can review what they know, check for errors and omissions, And see through to their original, clear wisdom.

Except for those who have completely turned against enlightenment, This treasury offers all such benefits.

Could the ocean’s ink record a single tenet? Could nine-tenths of an aeon explain its wondrous meaning? How can anyone hope to reveal the essence of the Dharma with just a few words? (Note: This points out the difficulty of summarizing vast teachings.)

When the Thus-Come One was in deep meditation, Five hundred arhats each explained what they understood, Yet none had truly grasped the Buddha’s intent. But because each spoke in accordance with the true teaching, Their words are reliable and free of blame.

What I write here now is drawn entirely from the ancient masters’ words, Not from my own speculations. Therefore, you should trust and accept it. (Note: This responds to the difficulty of summarizing vast teachings.)

The wise understand the raft simile, And do not cling to the words on the page. (Note: This refers to the difficulty of letting go of the signpost upon reaching the goal.) They see the moon and forget the finger, Or step into the ocean and no longer discuss counting grains of sand.

The skillful means are many— How could one single method deny all others? All are ways of Dharma practice. (Note: This responds by acknowledging the unfettered nature of skillful means.) They all serve to illustrate the wondrous function.

With this sublime merit, I vow to be present forever at the Buddha’s assembly. May the Dharma taught in the voice of the Single One Echo in my ears and never be forgotten— Like the ocean receiving a great rain, or water passing from one vessel to another. May I use this to benefit all beings, As boundless as the Dharma realm itself.
