Buddha's Words: Recorded Sayings of the Imperial Meditation Master

A Teaching for Chan Practitioner Wanxiu

Drawing water from the spring, we measure the source of the sea of our own nature; channeling through the conduit, the boundless flow has its own ancestral style. Opening ravines and valleys to become thoroughfares, filling rivers and seas with rippling waves. A thousand streams merge into the Way, ten thousand tributaries return to the source. Sometimes it sounds the ocean-tide roar, and fish and dragons transform in response; sometimes it spreads rivers and stretches the sky, allowing the great whale and roc to soar. The scaled and shelled find their refuge, the hidden dragon may leap. Deep and vast beyond measure, boundless without horizon. Though this is the empty nature of water, it is truly the function of a great person whose source is pure and whose flow is clear. Now tell me, where does the great person find their place of rest? Within the eye of a lotus fiber, the universe is vast; at the tip of a rabbit's horn, worlds are immense. When stillness and motion are both cut through at once, naturally heavenly flowers rain down from above.
