Wonderful and Good Fire. "The ghostly spirit is still and silent; wondrous wisdom is hard to reach. Life and death, fortune and misfortune—the spirits can divine them." Suddenly he raised the firebrand and said, "Wonderful and Good! Wonderful and Good! Where are you going?" Then he drew a circle in the air, tossed it down, and said, "One torch burns away the debts of worldly dust; the burdens of ignorance and karma are reduced to ashes. Open wide your two bright, knowing eyes, clap your hands, and with a hearty laugh, come and go."
Liangxian Huo. "Formation, dwelling, decay, and emptiness—these are the seasons of heaven. Birth, aging, sickness, and death—these are the lot of humanity. How do they differ? And yet, layman Liangxian, without cutting off afflictions, awakened to Buddha-nature; without abandoning birth and death, realized Nirvana. Departing, yet not ceasing to be; coming, yet not being born. Let me ask you all: 'Setting aside birth and death for now—how would you express the single phrase of neither departing nor coming?'" With the firebrand he drew this ⊙, gave a mighty shout, and said: "Smash the gnat's jar and the sky within it—play freely in every direction, adorning the ocean of majesty."
Hengyi held up a torch, traced a circle in the air with it, and said:
"In the heart of the great fire, there is a fine place to hide. Step straight ahead, again and again — that is the true response. How clearly the golden bones show their joints: once through the red furnace, once made new."
He gave a shout, and threw down the torch.
Jing Shou was cast into the fire. "These two words, life and death—everyone has them. These two paths, going and staying—who can avoid them? Since no one can avoid them, then tell me: Was Jing Shou dying, or leaving? And right now, where is he?" He gave a shout, tossed down the torch, and said: "Last night, where the lotus pond bloomed, there he sits upright in magnificent adornment."
