The Heart Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom is an essential Buddhist scripture, translated by the eminent Tang dynasty monk Facheng, belonging to the core texts of the Prajñāpāramitā section of Mahayana Buddhism. The version translated by Xuanzang is the most widely circulated, while Facheng’s translation also holds significant historical value. The sutra expounds the Prajñā view of emptiness through the teaching that “form is emptiness, emptiness is form,” revealing the truth of dependent origination and the empty nature of all phenomena. Though comprising just over 260 characters, it distills the essence of Prajñā thought and is regarded as the “sutra within sutras.” It holds a lofty position in Buddhism, serving as an essential text for cultivating the wisdom of Prajñā. It has profoundly influenced Chinese Buddhism and is widely recited and studied.

The Heart Sutra of Prajñāpāramitā(Dunhuang Stone Chamber Version)

Translated by the Great Virtuous Tripitaka Master of the Nation, the Śramaṇa Facheng.

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Bhagavān was dwelling on Vulture Peak Mountain in Rājagṛha, together with a great assembly of bhikṣus and bodhisattva mahāsattvas. At that time, the World-Honored One entered evenly into the profound and clear samādhi, the gateway to the distinctive aspects of the Dharma. Then, at that time, the bodhisattva mahāsattva Avalokiteśvara, while practicing the profound prajñāpāramitā, clearly perceived and illuminated the five aggregates, seeing that their essential nature is entirely empty.

Then, the Venerable Shariputra, empowered by the Buddha's blessing, addressed the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, the Great Being, saying: "If a virtuous man wishes to practice the profound Perfection of Wisdom, how should he train?" Having spoken these words.

The great Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva said to the venerable Shariputra: "If any good man or good woman wishes to practice the profound Perfection of Wisdom, they should observe in this way: the nature of all five aggregates is empty. Form is emptiness, emptiness is form. Form does not differ from emptiness, emptiness does not differ from form. In the same way, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are also all empty. Therefore, Shariputra, all phenomena have the nature of emptiness, without characteristics, without birth, without cessation, without defilement, without separation from defilement, without decrease, without increase.

Shariputra, therefore, in that state of emptiness, there is no form, no feeling, no perception, no mental formations, no consciousness. No eyes, no ears, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind. No sights, no sounds, no smells, no tastes, no touches, no objects of mind. No realm of eyes... up to no realm of consciousness. No ignorance, nor ending of ignorance... up to no old age and death, nor ending of old age and death. No suffering, no cause of suffering, no ending of suffering, no path. No wisdom, no attainment, no non-attainment.

Therefore, Shariputra, because they have nothing to attain, all bodhisattvas rely on the Perfection of Wisdom, their minds have no obstacles. Having no obstacles, they have no fear. They transcend all confusion and reach ultimate peace. All Buddhas of the past, present, and future also rely on the Perfection of Wisdom to attain supreme perfect enlightenment.

Shariputra, therefore know that the Perfection of Wisdom is the great sacred mantra, the great illuminating mantra, the supreme mantra, the incomparable mantra. It is the mantra that removes all suffering, true and undeniable. Thus the Perfection of Wisdom is the secret mantra."

Then he spoke the Heart Sutra’s mantra, saying:

Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone completely beyond, enlightenment, so be it.

Shariputra, a great bodhisattva should learn and practice the profound perfection of wisdom in precisely this way.

Then, the World-Honored One arose from that meditation and said to the noble Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva: "Excellent, excellent! Good son! So it is, so it is! It is just as you have said. One should train in the Perfection of Wisdom exactly like that. All Tathāgatas will also rejoice in this."

When the Bhagavan had finished speaking these words, the Venerable Shariputra, the Noble Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, and all the beings of the world—gods, humans, asuras, gandharvas, and others—hearing what the Buddha had said, rejoiced greatly, accepted it with faith, and undertook to practice it accordingly.
