Pei Xiu (802-860 CE), a Tang Dynasty minister and devout Buddhist, posed questions on Buddhist doctrine to Zongmi (780-841 CE), a scholar-monk of the same era. Zongmi, a key figure in the Chan and Huayan schools, authored the influential "Chan Yuan Zhu Quan Ji" (Record of the Sources of Chan) which elucidated the essence of Chan Buddhism.
