This phrase refers to the Indian monks Paramārtha (婆罗门达多罗) and Jñānagupta (阇那崛多), among others, who were invited by imperial decree to translate Buddhist scriptures during the Sui Dynasty. Jñānagupta, in particular, is credited with translating the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra and other important Mahayana texts.
