> To Lu Taizai, the Elder

> Only the Most Venerable One, riding on the power of compassionate vows, manifested in the form of an official to perform the great work of the Buddha, serving as the eyes of both worldly and spiritual beings for an entire generation. He seamlessly blended worldly and transcendent teachings, always returning to the diamond-like true mind. Even as a humble monk, I have long known this. From the moment he entered the world until his final act of compassionate guidance, he never for a single thought abandoned his resolve to protect the Dharma—such was his life’s work of liberating beings. Though he has now followed the impermanent nature of existence and dissolved like an illusion, his Dharma body remains firm and indestructible. Even if the three calamities were to engulf the world, it would remain serene and eternal. Not only did his merits benefit the nation for countless generations, but his contributions to the Dharma will stand as tall as Mount Sumeru. Alas, now that the banner of the Dharma has fallen, on whom shall the fourfold assembly rely? Who now will take up the reins of the white ox cart and become the great patron of the teachings? This loss to the Dharma is truly heartbreaking. Yet it is a comfort that you, as his worthy heir, not only carry forward the family’s worldly legacy but also uphold its spiritual renown. While grief lies in his passing, joy is found in your continuation. I, a monk dwelling in distant wilderness, bound by karma in this land of suffering, regret that I cannot personally offer incense before his shrine or chant praises of his virtue. Still, this single thought of mine has already flown across the blue seas and vast skies. From afar, I offer this half-verse before his true presence, trusting that in the realm of tranquil light, he will receive it with joy. I pray that you, in your kindness, will accept this sincere intention and guide your attendants to circumambulate three times before his seat. Please do not dismiss it as mere folly.
