> With Wang Zhongbai, the Grand Historian

> It is often said that all saints and ordinary beings rely on illusory karma to sustain their existence. Thus, coming and going, arising and ceasing, gathering and dispersing, appearing and disappearing—all are but dream-like affairs. Now, this journey of ten thousand miles through mountains and wilderness serves as ample proof. In the perfect illumination of wisdom, not a thread's breadth separates us. Yet, with a single flicker of deluded thought, vast clouds and skies appear, and one no longer knows which direction or place one is in. As it is said: "When emotions arise, wisdom is obscured; when thoughts shift, reality appears different." These are not empty words. Through the compassionate protection of the venerable ones, I have remained safe in all respects. However, the region here has suffered successive famines, and now we face scorching heat, as if treading on boiling water or walking through fire—truly an apt metaphor. I can endure all hardships, yet this illusory, transient body finds it difficult to withstand such melting heat. I fear I may soon fill a ditch, never again to behold the sun and sky. Please convey my gratitude to all old friends, and urge them to strive diligently and uphold the Way with care. To Master Yuqing and the other venerables, I cannot send separate farewells. May your compassion extend far to embrace us all.

又。

> Again.

> The world's appearances are like flowers in the sky—illusory. Sentient beings are upside down in their perceptions. Only those with the eye of wisdom can see clearly, gazing upon the serene and tranquil realm of cessation. I imagine that since we parted, your practice of silent realization has deepened boundlessly. I have heard that the path of enlightenment is concerned with all realms of suffering. I recall that night in Chang'an, by the lamplight in the deep of night, when we met—it felt as if life had been renewed. Seeing the look of joyful surprise on your face, I knew well the longing in your heart before we met and the affection you held after we parted. Although the ancients spoke of using principle to overcome emotion, when it comes to emotion and principle, there are times when they cannot be separated. This is the compassion born of shared essence, entering the realm of true understanding—like the moon reflected in a cold pond, or a person standing before a precious mirror, unable to escape their own reflection. In the capital lately, the Dharma community has grown sparse, and close friends have scattered like stars. How could one not feel lonely? I hear that Dongguan has recently entered the capital, and I imagine you will meet old friends again, hearts resonating in mutual understanding—there are things beyond words. As for this lowly one, living in this miasma-filled land, I rely on your radiant care. My four elements are cool and tranquil, free from all afflictions. In the past, we spoke of purity and defilement arising from the mind, and suffering and joy depending on oneself. Now I have truly realized this. When illuminated by the wisdom of the Dharma-realm ocean, all traces vanish without a remnant.
