### 與高司馬

承垂情遺草。尤辱知己之真。可稱千載旦暮之遇。第山野人匪戴髮。言不關風。竊恐有玷明德耳。自惟早棄筆研。志探玄理。窮究性原者有年。至若詩文。原非本業。即有一二口頭語。慨以應化之迹。殊非作者擅場也。惟禪門著述。頗有數部草剏。竢此行南中荷戈之暇。緝集成編。寄請印正。儻其半偈可投。幸附不朽。則法施之隆。未必不自長者真心流出也。

> I am deeply moved by your kind remembrance and the letter you sent, which truly reflects the sincerity of a close friend. This can be called a rare encounter, as if meeting across a thousand years. However, as a person of the mountains and wilderness, I am not one who wears the hair of worldly concerns, and my words do not touch upon the winds of literary elegance. I fear they may tarnish your bright virtue. I have long since abandoned the brush and inkstone, devoting myself to exploring the profound truths and delving into the nature of reality for many years. As for poetry and prose, they were never my true calling. Even if I have a few spoken words, they are but traces of expedient means, far from the mastery of a true writer. Only in the writings of the Chan tradition have I drafted several works. I await the leisure during my journey south, amidst the duties of carrying arms, to compile them into a volume and send them for your review. If even half a verse proves worthy, I would be fortunate to have it preserved for posterity. Then, the noble act of Dharma-giving may indeed flow from the sincere heart of a venerable elder.
